On Sunday, Sept. 1, the carriage agreement between Directv and Disney officially expired without a new deal in place, so channels like ABC, Disney Channel, ESPN, ESPN2, Freeform, National Geographic, and more were pulled off of Directv’s satellite and streaming platforms. The timing is neither ideal, nor coincidental. With the college football season just underway, and the NFL kicking off on Thursday, Disney knows that Directv can ill-afford not to be without the largest sports networks at the start of football season.
Last season, Disney had a similar situation with Charter cable that resulted in subscribers missing some college games, but the dispute was resolved at the 11th hour just in time for the inaugural “Monday Night Football” broadcast of the season.
