Studio Ghibli is one of the most famous and beloved anime studios ever. Since its formation in 1985, the studio has produced many beloved and critically praised movies. The studio's number and variety of films often spark intense fan debates about which film from Studio Ghibli's vast catalog is the best introduction for newcomers. If you skim through any forum where this question is asked, Howl's Moving Castle generally comes out as the consensus choice. But is it really the best introduction to the legendary studio?
Released in 2004 and directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, Howl's Moving Castle follows a young milliner named Sophie. Sophie's world is turned upside down when she meets a strange and eccentric wizard named Howl while out on a walk. This meeting leaves a massive impression on Sophie, but it also causes her issues as, a short while later, the Witch of the Waste appears and transforms Sophie into a grandma.
