Stock Market Surges To Record Highs After Donald Trump’s Election Win – Update
Updated with closing figures. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged more than 1500 points Wednesday as investors registered enthusiasm for a second Donald Trump presidency.
The Nasdaq and S&P 500 were both up more modestly, rising 2.5% and 3%, respectively. The Russell 2000, which tracks small and emerging companies, jumped 6% to an all-time record high as entrepreneurs and business leaders celebrated what they expected to be a lighter touch by federal regulators under Trump. All major indices – the Dow, the Russell, the S&P and the Nasdaq – finished the trading day at new record highs.
Bond markets fell as money shifted into so-called “Trump trades,” predominantly in stocks but also in cryptocurrencies. Shares in banks, private prisons and gun manufacturers all posted gains.
