In the last few years, the dark fantasy genre of the anime and manga industry has seen the release of some great stories that have extended the level of bleak and dark themes within the genre. One such example that has gained a lot of attention in the dark fantasy genre is Made in Abyss, which is written and illustrated by manga creator Akihito Tsukushi.

Made in Abyss follows the story of a young girl named Riko who lives in a town surrounded by a large abyss. She meets a cyborg boy named Reg in the abyss and brings him back to treat him and finally befriends him. Later on, she finds out that her mother is alive and is trapped in the abyss, which forces Riko to go on a journey deep within the Earth.
