Conan O'Brien's Parents Die Three Days Apart
Former late-night host and comic Conan O'Brien is in mourning, having endured the deaths of both of his parents in a three-day span.
Although Conan is a famous comedian, his mother and father were notable in their own right.
Conan hails from Brookline, Massachusetts, a part of the broader Boston area.
On December 13, the day the news about his parents' deaths broke, CBS affiliate Wbz-tv summarized the lives of Conan's father, Dr. Thomas O'Brien, and his mother, Ruth Reardon O'Brien.
Wbz-tv described Conan's parents as "pioneers," and reported that his father foresaw the rise of "antimicrobial resistance," a problem in the field of infectious disease:
"Dr. Thomas O'Brien was the director of the division of infectious diseases at what is now Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. A Boston Globe obituary says he 'sounded the alarm' decades ago on the dangers of drug-resistant bacteria and viruses."
Conan's mother, Ruth, was similarly accomplished.
