The only overlap between Creature Commandos and The Suicide Squad -- both written by James Gunn -- are the characters of Amanda Waller and Weasel. The latter character was only in a few scenes of the film as part of the distraction squad sent into Corto Maltese. Weasel also survived the trip with the Creature Commandos, and viewers learn that a devastating fact about the former Suicide Squad member wasn't true at all.
While it's fair to suggest Creature Commandos' similarity to Gunn's other work is a mistake, he can make the formula work.
