Filmmaker J.J. Abrams rose to prominence with his work on hit television shows and as a screenwriter for blockbuster movies. In the 2000s, he made a name for himself by directing big-budget franchise movies, including the Star Trek reboot and two of the Star Wars sequels. However, the latter became a bit of a stain on his career after the sequel trilogy ended poorly.

Amidst these big-budget projects, Abrams also oversaw the production of movies in the Cloverfield franchise, which remain extremely grounded and exceptionally well-made sci-fi movies.
