‘Freaky Tales’ Trailer: Pedro Pascal and Tom Hanks Appear in an Anthologized Love Letter to ’80s Pop Culture

If you’ve ever felt a tinge of nostalgia for the Bay Area in the 1980s, “Freaky Tales” is the movie for you.
The latest effort from filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck — who cut their teeth on independent films like “Sugar” and “Mississippi Grind” before directing “Captain Marvel” — is an omnibus film comprised of four vignettes set in Oakland in 1987. The film is a send-up of just about everything that shaped ’80s pop culture, from hip-hop and sci-fi blockbusters to the decade’s biggest sports stars and kung fu movies. The film first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, with Lionsgate eventually picking it up for a theatrical release this April.
