Film Review: Scandal (1950) by Akira Kurosawa

Akira Kurosawa campaigns against the yellow-press and pleas for personal privacy. Just like “Drunken Angel” (1948) is against the yakuza and “I Live in Fear” (1955) is anti-war, “Scandal” is a protest film criticizing the methods of the rising press of post-war Japan. Liberalized from American occupancy censorship, Japanese people were finally able to say and write anything they pleased. But the new freedom of speech also paved the way for gossip and false accusations. In the age of fake news, “Scandal” is a film that remains relevant as never before.
