The duels in Yu-Gi-Oh! GXlaid the groundwork for the rest of the Yu-Gi-Oh!anime. Compared to the duels in the original series, Gx's are better paced, not near-exclusively focused on a small group of characters, and feature decks with actual archetypes, as opposed to loose themes. Some of its best duels highlight the comedic nature of the anime's earlier seasons, while others fully lean into the dark drama of Seasons 3 and 4.

Starring powerful duelists like Jaden, Zane, and Aster, Yu-Gi-Oh! Gx features some of the most exciting and dramatic duels in the franchise. These duels are unpredictable, they advance the story and/or characters in a meaningful way, and they feature some of the coolest monsters of the era. Like with any great anime fight, the relationship between the participants can also amplify a duel's impact, and make it an emotional experience.
