“I didn’t want Luffy to become too mature”: Oda May Have Fumbled With Ace’s Fate, but His Real Genius Was Luffy’s Timeskip in One Piece
The events leading up to the time skip of One Piece made it abundantly clear that Luffy and the Straw Hats were way too weak to survive the New World. Their adventures in the Grand Line were filled with close calls, one where the captain could’ve died.
The Summit War Saga only honed in on this plot point. Luffy successfully broke into and escaped Impel Down but he was heavily injured by Magellan’s poison. Moreover, without Trafalgar Law, he wouldn’t have survived Akainu’s injuries. One Piece got realistic very quickly.

Being unable to save Ace was a huge wake-up call to Luffy and he instructed the Straw Hats to train and reunite in 2 years instead. It showed immense patience for an otherwise impulsive protagonist.
Despite this moment of maturity, Luffy was still his typical self after the time skip in One Piece.
