David F. Sandberg on ‘Lights Out’ Sequel: “I Think the Moment Has Passed”

A sequel to Lights Out was announced a week after the original film’s release in 2016, but nothing ever came of it. Replying to a fan on Instagram, director David F. Sandberg confirmed that the follow-up is unlikely to happen.
“It’s been nine years since that movie came out. I think the moment has passed,” the filmmaker wrote. “There was a script for a sequel but that particular script wouldn’t work now that Gabriel is an adult.”
He’s referring to Gabriel Bateman, who starred as Martin in the supernatural horror film alongside Teresa Palmer, Alexander Dipersia, Billy Burke, and Maria Bello.
Lights Out marked Sandberg’s feature directorial debut, based on his viral short film of the same name. Eric Heisserer penned the script.
