‘The Apothecary Diaries’ Uses a Clever Technique to Make Up for Its Pacing Issue
2025 has been a fantastic year for anime, and the return of The Apothecary Diaries with its second season has been a highlight. Its debut season was a guaranteed success, but as the story amps up, so does its popularity. The light novels are beloved by their fans, too.
If you aren’t familiar with it, we follow Maomao, a clever apothecary who is kidnapped and sold to the Imperial Palace. Since it’s set in Tang Dynasty China, there aren’t many options for her, so she chooses to use her knowledge to help with the medical mysteries.

The series is more of a medical mystery drama with Maomao being the lead detective. Her intelligence catches the eye of Jinshi. We slowly watch the pair fall in love with each other, but unlike most romances in anime, she doesn’t focus on him much.
