Shia Labeouf’s Explosive, ‘Unconventional’ Experimental Theater Collective Slauson Rec Is Captured in Guerilla Doc

Embattled actor and filmmaker Shia Labeouf is now at the center of a documentary about his “unconventional” teaching style. Labeouf founded a free theater school at the Slauson Rec Center in South Central Los Angeles in 2018; the experimental theater company continued until November 2020, shortly before Labeouf was sued by his ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs for sexual battery, assault, and emotional distress.
Now, documentary “Slauson Rec” is detailing what transpired at the school across those two years. Labeouf’s former student Leo Lewis O’Neil directs the film, which is publicly supported by Labeouf. O’Neil shot approximately 800 hours of footage during his time at the company.
As the official synopsis reads, the documentary “examines power dynamics and control within an experimental theater collective. What started as an open, egalitarian workshop quickly evolved into intense daily rehearsals led by Shia, pushing participants to their limits.”
