An entire unfinished cut of A Minecraft Movie has leaked online just as the completed movie opened in theaters. Of course, that didn't stop it from becoming the biggest opening weekend of 2025. A Minecraft Movie took the world by storm as the movie performed well above its initial $60 million projected opening weekend and grossed $157 million in its opening weekend, beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the highest-grossing opening weekend for a video game movie. While A Minecraft Movie had a lot to celebrate, it wasn't all good news, as Warner Bros. found themselves scrambling to stop a completed film cut with unfinished visual effects from spreading across the internet.
Variety revealed that a workprint for A Minecraft Movie leaked online right before the film opened worldwide. The cut of the movie contained an unfinished VFX shot that began circulating online just as A Minecraft Movie was starting its theatrical release.
