Thunderbolts* Thursday Previews Fall Short of Matching Captain America: Brave New World
Thunderbolts* opens in theaters today amid a positive critical reception, hyping it as one of the best Marvel Cinematic Universe entries in years. However, the Phase Five finale's Thursday previews suggest it has work to do at the box office as it fails to match the underwhelming Captain America: Brave New World.
According to Deadline, the Jake Schreier-helmed Thunderbolts* earned $11 million in Thursday previews on May 1. Despite the solid return, Thunderbolts*' tally fell just short of Brave New World's Thursday previews, with Anthony Mackie's first solo Captain America outing raking in $12 million in February.
Brave New World, the penultimate Phase Five film, went in with high expectations as it continued from where the hit Disney+ miniseries, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, left off. However, the Captain America sequel struggled to break even, grossing $415 million worldwide against its $180 million budget, putting it on the lower end of the MCU box-office spectrum.
