Bella Ramsey Says Gendered Awards Categories Are “Important” to Ensure “Recognition for Women in the Industry Is Preserved”

Bella Ramsey is opening up about their opinions on having male- and female-gendered awards categories.

The Last of Us star candidly came out as nonbinary and gender fluid while promoting the show’s first season. During a Tuesday episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast, Ramsey said they “didn’t find it insulting” when they were nominated in the best leading actress category at the 2023 Emmys, adding that it’s “important that we have a female category and a male category.

“I think it’s so important that recognition for women in the industry is preserved,” they said. “I think the gendered categories conversation is a really interesting one. I don’t have the answer, and I wish that there was something that was an easy way around it, but I think that it is really important that we have a female category and a male category.”
