On 8th May, 2025, the Vatican elected its new Pope after the death of Pope Francis. Robert Francis Prevost, an American Cardinal Bishop, was elected and will be known as Pope Leo Xiv. This entire ordeal went viral over social media, with the 2025 papal conclave becoming the subject of memes.
The Vatican, however, isn’t so far removed from social media culture. Anime has become a popular and global phenomenon. The Boy and the Heron won several awards, making great strides for anime. The Catholic Chruch noticed this and made a very interesting move.
