Upon the death of his father, the head of a yakuza gang, Kikuo (Ryo Yoshizawa) is taken under the wing of the renowned Kabuki actor Hanjiro Hanai (Ken Watanabe). He becomes his disciple alongside Shunsuke (Ryusei Yokohama), Hanjiro’s only son. The two young men decide to dedicate their lives to the art of Kabuki. Over the course of fifty years, they experience glory and downfall, scandal and triumph, friendship and betrayal. [Source: Directors’ Fortnight]

Kokuho by Japanese-Korean director Lee Sang-il (The Wandering Moon) will have a world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. Toho has scheduled a theatrical release in Japan for June 6. The movie is an adaptation of Shuichi Yoshida’s 2017 novel of the same name and the screenplay is by Satoko Okudera (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time).
