Menendez Brothers Resentenced for 1989 Murders of Parents, Clearing Major Hurdle to Regaining Freedom

Erik and Lyle Menendez have been resentenced for the double murder of their parents, seeing their sentence reduced from life without the possibility of parole to 50 years with the possibility of parole, a Los Angeles judge ruled on Tuesday evening. The move sets up the brothers, who’ve been incarcerated for more than 30 years, to regain their freedom.
Following the surprise decision, the brothers must now appear before the California Parole Board, where a panel and Gov. Gavin Newsom will make the final decision on granting them parole. The brothers were already set to appear before the parole board on June 13 in a hearing related to the possibility of clemency.
Judge Michael Jesic’s Tuesday ruling came at the end of the first day of a two-day resentencing that Los Angeles’ new District Attorney, Nathan Hochman, fought tooth and nail to bring to a halt over the past six months.
