Can they pull it off?? Yes they Khan
Sorry for the bad pun in the title but I just had to. Anyway, Ghost of Tsushima is probably one ofthe worst PlayStation triple A title I've played. But that just goes to show how good these games are. I would give this a 7.5 if I could because I have a few problems but overall this is great game that just falls short in a few places.
The Good: First of all there is the story. The story in the this game is engaging, interesting and honestly kind of unexpected. I had a good time following these characters and their journey to send the Mongolian Empire away from their island. Whilst I do have some problems with the story I think overall most of the story missions are fun and interesting there are a few problems I have with them that I will get to later. The gameplay is also something that was just so enjoyable. This game really scratches that itch of wanting to become a Samurai and save your people. Reminds me of Samurai Jack, going around and protecting the people of the island and dispensing justice on evil. The combat was fun and challenging without being overly difficult. I also enjoyed the divide we see with characters later in the story and lots of the side characters are fun and interesting with their own stories with lots of twists and turns. As well I felt the villain was very well established and really had a terrifying screen presence. And not to mention this game looks beautiful, sometimes I would be going around the open world just admiring how good it looks. So whilst some of the graphic fidelity might not be as good as God of War or The Last of Us Part II, the lighting and ambiance really made up for it.
The Bad: Now for the bad. Let's start with the story issues I touched on earlier. I think the problem has less to do with the story itself and more to do with the lead character. For me Jin Sakai fell kinda flat. Whilst I enjoyed his character arc and was interested by the tough decisions he had to make, he felt very bland. He was always very monotone and very rarely expressed much emotion which then hurt the story for me. Also lots of the side missions just feel bland a tedious. And the gameplay can kinda just get bland and repetitive after liberating camp after camp. And a lot if voice lines were just repeated time after time and it kinda got annoying.
So I overall I think this game is a bit of a mixed bag but is something definitely worth it if you're interested. However if you are just looking for a triple A single player story game, there are better options.
