German actor and director, the son of physician Hartmut Doermer and the actress and drama coach Ruth von Zerboni. Although Doermer studied sociology and economics after matriculating from school, he ended up opting for the acting profession courtesy of his mother's mentoring and connections. He made his screen debut in 1954, at the same time playing small roles on stage in Hamburg and Munich. Audiences first took notice of him in Teenage Wolfpack (1956), a seminal crime drama dealing with post-war juvenile delinquency. Doermer was cast as the gang leader's sensible younger brother, juxtaposed to the erratic rebel (as played by Horst Buchholz). Doermer also appeared as an NCO in the classic war drama Der Stern von Afrika (1957), a biopic based on the meteoric, though brief career of Luftwaffe ace Hans Joachim Marseille. He received the Deutscher Filmband in Gold for his performance as a disillusioned member of the socialist SED party who escapes with his girlfriend to the West in Escape to Berlin (1961).
In the 60s, Doermer became a co-founder and prominent member of the New German Cinema. He subsequently starred in several high profile pictures, often in intellectual, cynical or angst-ridden roles. His more commercial projects included the hugely popular murder whodunnit Das Halstuch (1962) and a small role in Robert Redford's Downhill Racer (1969). In 1963, Doermer formed his own production company, Filmfirma Cine Dokument Film, which served as an outlet for a series of social and cultural documentaries -- often set in Africa or India -- which Doermer wrote, directed, produced and occasionally narrated. In the 80's, Doermer resumed screen acting, though appearing almost exclusively on television, often portraying both fictional and historical authority figures. In 1989, he (in association with the actor Hans Clarin) set up a private, culturally focused regional radio network (Ensemble am Chiemsee) in upper Bavaria. Doermer was predeceased by his wife, the writer Lore Bender Schmidt-Polex with whom he fathered three children.- Cinematographer

She was born in Rostock into a cultivated, well-to-do family, the daughter of stage director Walter Eggert and actress/ author Agnes-Marie Grisebach (1913-2011). With her schooling completed in 1951, the family took her to Heidelberg where Almut proceeded to study for her diploma as a cosmetician. It is unclear whether she worked for very long in that profession, since, by 1956, she had moved to Berlin to take acting classes at a drama school. Graduating in 1959, she married the actor Wolfgang Spier and became known as Almut Eggert-Spier. They had two daughters (one adopted), both of whom later also followed the acting path. The union with Spier ended in divorce in 1965.
Almut began her performing career in 1958 on stage at the Vaganten Bühne, located in the most fashionable part of Berlin Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, near the zoological gardens and the Kurfürstendamm. For the next fifteen years, she was cast in leading roles at various theatres in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Stuttgart. From 1972 to 1973, she plied her trade as an ensemble member of the famous Berlin cabaret Die Stachelschweine.
Following her screen debut in 1958, Almut appeared in a number of films made for television, primarily as a supporting actress but with occasional leads in comedies and romances like Wiedersehen auf Raten (1963), Die Liebenden von Florenz (1966) and Klein Erna auf dem Jungfernstieg (1969). Guest spots in TV shows have included Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980) and Tatort (1970). She also had a recurring role as a highway police chief inspector in Alarm für Cobra 11 - Die Autobahnpolizei (1996), an expensively produced action series filled with car chases, fight scenes and spectacular explosions.
Almut Eggert's most voluminous body of work was in the area of voice dubbing. Truly prolific, she was the German synchronizing voice for stars like Candice Bergen, Lee Remick, Madeline Kahn,Raquel Welch, Gena Rowlands, Ursula Andress and Stella Stevens, among numerous others. She became well known in Germany for her work on horror movies, including the Dracula and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises. She was also the German voice of Lorraine Gary (as Ellen Brody) in Jaws (1975) and that of Adrienne Barbeau (as Stevie Wayne) in John Carpenter's The Fog (1980). Additionally, she took on adapting scripts of Murder, She Wrote (1984) for German consumption.
Almut's active performing career waned in the late 1990s, though she continued her dubbing work well into the next decade.- Actress

Though well established within the East German movie making community, Heiner Carow had to manoeuvre when his candid, realistic work upset officials, but the popularity of some of his films and the recognition he got at festivals (like the Silver Bear in West Berlin in 1990) put him in a comfortable position, he was Vice President of the Academy of Arts in the DDR from 1982 through 1993. He was born in Rostock in 1929 and he had as his mentors veteran DEFA directors Slatan Dudow and Gerhard Klein when he was in the studio class for young filmmakers from 1950 to 1952. His The Legend of Paul and Paula was said to have played longer than any other movie in German theatres, and his Coming Out dared to treat the subject of male homosexuality for the first time in an East German film.
