- Rock roadie turned pest controller Tommy Saxondale feels so embittered about his divorce he attends anger management classes, making rather cynical contributions. He has a new girlfriend,Magz,a would-be anarchist shopkeeper who annoys other traders with her provocative wares, such as F*** OFF T-shirts. Having sacked his previous assistant Tommy engages dim teenager Roland, who also becomes Magz's lodger, and the pair are sent by Tommy's sarcastic receptionist Vicky to deal with a pigeon infestation. As a result a trio of threatening animal rights activists pay Tommy a visit, one bearing a knife. Fortunately Tommy knows how to get rid of them.
- After an especially trying session Tommy learns that Magz's shop faces closure following an 'obscene' window display and turns up at the council meeting, where, unaware that she has resolved matters, gives a lengthy talk on freedom of speech. He and Raymond are hired to rid mice from the home of boorish television presenter Jerome Wilson, whose automobile magazine show is Tommy's favourite and whom Tommy unsuccessfully tries to interest in attending a weekend car enthusiasts' meeting. Jerome eventually turns up but Tommy, believing that his TV idol has failed him,has has some unfortunate T-shirts printed which do anything but flatter Wilson.
- Deggsy,an old mate of Tommy from his roadie days, comes to stay, parking his van in the drive. He is still touring with revival bands and is withering of Tommy's new domesticity, taking him out drinking and introducing him to a prostitute but Tommy spends the night talking to her about eye conditions. Ultimately Deggsy only succeeds in making Tommy feel pleased with his new life style, especially when Deggsy's hard drinking means he has to have a leg amputated.
- Tommy's daughter Stevie comes to stay, with her boyfriend Matt, who is impressed by Tommy's tales of his days on the road. Tommy, however,is less taken with Matt's banging on about his interest in extreme sports. Though the couple cannot persuade Tommy to go with them to a rock festival he does give Matt one of his precious souvenirs given him by one of his rock gods - possibly as atonement for suggesting to Matt that his irritable bowel disease can be terminal.
- After falling off a ladder and having trouble in the bedroom stakes, Tommy decides to work out at his local gym though the exercise nearly kills him. However, after being given the medical all-clear, he finds an erotic new use for paper suits. Raymond, on the other hand, dumps voracious older divorcee Tina because all she wants from him is sex.
- After Tommy's van gets wheel-clamped whilst parked on land belonging to the mighty pest control organization Organosolve he suspects that the company is falsely drumming up trade by causing infestations. He sets out to expose the firm, negotiating several concessions for himself as a result.
- After a drunken Tommy is rude to her friends Magz goes home to her parents for a while, refusing to answer his calls. He finds it hard to cope without her domestically as well and almost succumbs to temptation with saucy customer Janet. However he determines to remain loyal to his partner and turns down Janet's advances, meeting Magz at the station to organize a romantic reunion.
- Whilst on a job at a rock club Tommy is called upon to sound check the band and introduces Raymond to his old mate Malcolm 'Rabies' Jessup,a former wild man of rock. Sadly for Tommy Malcolm is now anything but wild and has sanitized the old sounds for a modern audience. Consequently Tommy's efforts to bring back the old days whilst stepping in at the mixing desk for a Queen tribute band are not met with due appreciation.
- Called out to clear pigeons from a warehouse Tommy and Raymond spot the suicidal Martin about to jump from the roof and talk him down. However Martin takes Tommy's offer to come and see him any time he feels low rather too literally and soon Magz and Tommy are hiding from him as he is calling on a daily basis. Ultimately an encounter at a karaoke club where Martin credits Vicky as his saviour causes Tommy to wonder why he bothered.
- When squatters move into the area straight-laced neighbours Jonathan and Bethny hold a meeting at the local Community Centre to canvass support for their eviction. Tommy, however, backed by Magz, provides the voice of opposition, championing the squatters as free spirits. However, after a visit to the filthy squat, where his bag of videos gets stolen,he is not quite so adamant in his protest.
- Whilst working at a boys' private school,Tommy is asked by the head to give a talk on his work. Seeing the place as a clone factory, his efforts to encourage an anti-establishment attitude fall flat and, though he temporarily wins them over with his tales of his days as a roadie, when he finds that they have glued him to his seat, his support for the free spirit quickly dissolves. He does, however, believe he has got a result when he reads their opinions of him.
- After refusing to pay an on-the-spot fine for having no train ticket Tommy appears in court where he chooses to defend himself. Despite his garrulous speeches to the jury, dubious jokes and having gay junkie Keanu and Magz's earnestly crusading friend Penny as his witnesses - or possibly because they have worn the judge down - the case is dismissed, which Tommy sees as a triumph for democracy.
- Annoyed at Tommy's cynicism at Penny's 'Beyond Gender' art exhibition Magz books herself into a week long residential yoga course. Tommy is instantly jealous of her tutor Toby and goes to bizarre lengths to show his spiritual side - though they prove to be unnecessary,as does his claim that he is dying of cancer since Magz only has eyes for him.
