- Because of the war, a 12-year-old boy from England, Hugh, is sent to live with the Andrews family in Ohio. But he isn't so happy when things begin to change and his father forgoes their evening game of Chinese Checkers to play chess with Hugh who shows himself to be a formidable scholar. As the three sit there waiting, they each reflect on the ebbs and flows in their thoughts from the time of first discussing the plan among themselves to now. Without yet even knowing what the principal will do, would each one of them have done anything differently?

Roly's mum finds Roly at home, and angrily brings him back to school to talk to Mrs. McClusky. Annette lies in wait for Zammo with her stink bomb, she throws it, but her aim is off and she gets Gripper instead.
