Two pairs of Mormon missionaries from America live in a beaten-up apartment in the Dutch city of Haarlem. Their personalities are distinctly different. Appropriately, the most responsible one, Elder Johnson, is the District Leader and oversees their efforts. His companion, the vain Elder Van Pelt, seeks to become the assistant to the mission president (the top post available) as soon as possible, and he receives letters from three girlfriends he left behind. The capable Elder Rogers has become disillusioned and inattentive to his duties ever since a previous missionary companion returned to America, looked up and married Elder Rogers' girlfriend. As a result he is simply marking time until he returns home in a few weeks time. The three meet Elder Rogers' new companion, Elder Calhoun, in the train station. This new elder is a nerdy but enthusiastic "greenie" that has just arrived from the Missionary Training Center (MTC) in Utah. Unfortunately his training did not give him much fluency in the Dutch language, but as luck would have it, the first person he approaches to proselytize is a fellow American named Kyle. In the weeks that come, Elder Johnson and Van Pelt increasingly irritate each other while in contrast Elder Rogers and Calhoun begin to relate in a positive fashion as they teach Kyle about the Mormon faith.

As the Dutch title indicates, this series chronicles magnificently the life of William I "the Silent" of Orange, who grew up with his Lutheran family in the princely castle of a minor German countship of Nassau at Dillingen, till at eleven he inherited the vast riches of the prince of Orange (in southern France, with major possessions in the Low Countries), and was sent to the Holy Roman emperor Charles V's sister Margareth's gubernatorial court in Brussels to receive a Catholic education. He soon became a Habsburg confident and high councilor, a gifted diplomat and military officer. However when the persecution of the Protestants -and some other measures- arouses great resistance with the people and many nobles, it gets ever harder to remain loyal to the crown for the Lutheran at heart, who ends up leading the opposition once Charles' heir, king Philip II of Spain, ceases all negotiations and tries to impose his absolute rule by military force, which however only succeeds in splitting the Low Countries in a southern Catholic half under Habsburg control and a northern one, dominated by Calvinists, which ultimately becomes the 'crowned republic' of the Seventeen United Provices under William (and later his heirs, for centuries maintaining his title of Stadholder, theoretically Habsburg governor), painstakingly seeking a diplomatic course amidst the wars and religious civil wars throughout Europe. His personal life is also sketched, including several marriage alliances and a recognized son out of wedlock.

HOW JAN SCHOONHOVEN - THROUGH AN ACT OF FAITH - BECAME A FAMOUS ARTIST. In his own lifetime, the works of Jan Schoonhoven (Delft, 1914 -1994) were compared to those of Swiss painter Paul Klee and Dutch painter Piet Mondriaan. The symmetric and yet mysterious white reliefs made out of carton and papier maché by the artist, are now auctioned for large sums at Sothebys's and Christie's. Jan Schoonhoven himself however lived a sober and modest life as state postal official no. 18977. Who was this man, who one day spontaneously let world-famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama paint his nude body with Polka dots to appear the next day neatly dressed at the office? In 1967 he won a prize at the Ninth Bienal in Sao Paolo, which brought him instant fame internationally. Since then, he has been regarded as one of the most important European artist of the 20th century, an influence for a whole new generation. During research the filmmakers found out that an important commissioned art work had disappeared from its wall at the Post Office in Delft. In the film his friend, artist Jan Henderikse sets out to find the lost work. An image of Schoonhoven's life, his mysterious character and the meaning of his art work starts to reveal itself. For Jan Schoonhoven, Gothic churches and the streets in his home town Delft were a great source of inspiration, as well as the imposing cathedrals of Chartres, Paris and Cologne. In the early 1960s Dutch artists Armando, Jan Henderikse, Henk Peeters and Jan Schoonhoven formed the 'Nul Group', linked to the 'Zero Movement' in Germany, Italy and Japan with the French Yves Klein, the Italians Piero Manzoni and Lucio Fontana, Germans Mack, Piene, Uecker and Japanese Yayoi Kusama. Jan Schoonhoven - Official 18977 contains unique footage of Jan Schoonhoven from the 1970s and 1980s.
