A hiker is found dead in a remote forest that is popularly known as the "Murder Hole". Opposite the victim is a melting snowman with one eye missing. The start of a series of murders in the forest area near Freudenstadt. The handwriting is always the same: all victims show frostbite, while the left eye is covered with a black gem. The investigative team Maris Bächle and Konrad Diener has Florentin Sneelin in its sights, a reproductive doctor who lives in a romantic moated castle whose ice cellar not only stores champagne. The suspect knew the victims from a stay in a children's home many years ago. The teachers there enforced discipline and order using sometimes sadistic methods. Their wards did the same. There was a strict caste system among the children. Sneelin belonged to the lowest caste. He was a so called "Snow Child", one that his mother wanted "to foist" on his father.

For the wedding of Chris and Emily, the youngest daughter of the foundry entrepreneur Richard Schwarz and his wife Barbara, the four adult siblings come together in their parents' house. Also Felix, who emigrated to Canada, is the black sheep of the family. A sudden alarm in the house turns the living room into a panic room and Emily is caught up in an old trauma: as a child, she was kidnapped for three weeks and locked in a box in the forest for hours. Chris manages to calm his wife down, but the celebratory mood is soon disrupted by further family tensions: Felix wants to buy a farm in Canada and have his inheritance to the company paid out now. Eva watches her brother-in-law suspiciously because she feels threatened by Chris in her leadership position in the company. Only Leo, as always, tries to keep the family together with a good mood, even though she has her own problems. When it becomes apparent that Richard wants to talk to the children about the future of the company, old wounds and conflicts arise.

Eva and Bahar are full of anticipation and hope that they will soon become parents thanks to artificial insemination. The morning after the wedding, Richard tells the siblings that it is not Eva, but their brother-in-law Chris, who will be his successor in the company. Eva leaves the foundry deeply hurt. The other siblings are supposed to sign a waiver, but Felix refuses to do so. Chris tries unsuccessfully to smooth things over. Emily feels excluded by her siblings and wants to cancel the honeymoon. The trip is an important step for Emily, as she has hardly left her parents' house since the kidnapping, and Leo tries everything to change Emily's mind. Leo supports the family, but secretly swallows pills to be able to sleep. Barbara, who is an artist, feels liberated after Emily's departure and begins to work on new works full of energy. Emily and Chris board the night train to France, tense but happy. But when Emily wakes up at night, nothing is as it was.

Richard and Felix pick up the distraught Emily in Belgium and bring her home. Richard assumes there will be another kidnapping, but doesn't want to involve the police. Instead, he informs Hanno, his long-time security advisor, who calls the siblings together at their parents' house. The nerve-wracking wait for a report from the kidnappers is grueling. Felix uses his return to Germany to apologize to his childhood sweetheart Corinna for his bad behavior in the past. But Corinna confronts him with unpleasant questions: What happened between Felix and their childhood friend Jonas before Felix's sudden departure to Canada? Leo's son Linus finds sleeping pills from his mother and runs away to his father Pino, with whom Leo does not have a good relationship. Barbara is overwhelmed by caring for the retraumatized Emily and puts pressure on Felix to take care of her. Emily can't stand waiting any longer and finally secretly starts looking for clues.

The press besieges the Schwarz family estate after Emily's posting reveals that she is leading a double life. Barbara defends the family from the nosy photographers. After realizing that she has completely misjudged Emily, Barbara falls into a deep crisis and destroys her art. Leo despairs when her son tells her that he wants to live with his father in the future. She is unable to confide in her family. Richard now offers Eva his successor in the company, but Eva hesitates. The re-emerging memories of the time of Emily's kidnapping make her see Richard in a different light. Felix falls back into old behavior patterns and confronts Richard in the foundry in front of all the employees. The situation threatens to get out of control. Emily gets a tip from one of Chris' acquaintances that he will be coming to his old apartment that evening. She lets Leo drive her there without telling her who she will meet.

Kurt is badly affected by his brother's death. He wants to visit the Dragon's Rock [Drachenfels] mountain with the children. This was a place that was very important to Stefan and Kurt. Theo and Philipp go with him, the women take care of Nina. The day of the funeral has arrived, everyone is on edge. This is particularly hard for Luna, who worshiped her uncle.
