- In 1940, a couple are dragged out of their small church and killed; the husband with an axe and the wife is locked inside the church while it burns. The wife swears to come after the children of the people involved in their murders. Jump to 1985, a group of 4 friends; Erin, Julia, Sam and Tony, are called and set out to investigate paranormal events happening in a rural ranch. During the car ride its shown that Julia and Sam are in a relationship with Sam coming because of Julia. While driving, Julia sees a woman on the side of the road and insists on stopping as they nearly hit her. However, after stopping they cannot find her. After meeting with the mother, Carrie, at a local diner, they learn that the mother's two daughters have vanished after an encounter. Getting her permission to stay at the home, the group plan to drive there the next day. They stay overnight in a motel in town, where Julia experiences a nightmare. She sees two girls calling out to a little boy, who has drowned in the creek. She then sees the church burning, before a dead Carrie tells her to wake up. Sam comforts Julia in the morning after her dream, when Tony and Erin arrive back at the room. They show the others several newspaper clippings, detailing the death of the pastor's son who drowned in the creek. After the death, one of the girls who was with the boy disappears. The girl's family blames the boy's parents, leading to the opening sequence of the movie. In the article, it states that the wife's body wasn't found after the fire. The group set out to the home, where they meet the father and step father of the two girls, Frank. When opening the front door, he drops his keys. Sam picks them up and gives them to him, noting he is missing his left ring and pinky fingers. Frank shows them around the home, stating that Carrie had gotten worse over time and that it was hard to tell fantasy and reality apart. When asked where she is, he says she got up for a walk before he was awake. Tony is unloading the car while everyone else check out the house with Frank. He notices flies around the back of Frank's pick up truck and decides to check it out. He finds under a tarp a dead deer, causing him to throw up. He then hurries back inside to continue setting up. The home is partially packed up after the disappearance of the two girls, and has had the power cut off. Frank shows Julia the generator and petrol for it, then leaves them to investigate. Paranormal events start occuring once Frank leaves. Sam is looking for food in the kitchen when he sees a woman with a cloth covering her face in the mirror, but when he looks behind himself there isn't anyone there. This is the same woman from the road side Julia saw the day before. The group sets up to sleep in the living room with items found in the closets. Erin takes the first shift watching the cameras they have set up. She gets distracted reading the newspaper articles, while the screen changes between camera shots of each room, one camera turns to face her as well as the past events she is reading about play out. After realising the camera has turned to face her, she investigate and turns it back. Hearing noises, she checks on the others then goes upstairs and looks out the window as a storm rolls in. Meanwhile Tony wakes up and sees a woman walking around dripping wet. From the floor, he can only see her feet on the other side of the couch. As she gets closer, he looks up and sees nothing. The woman then stands above his head, and looks down at him. She drips on him, causing him to look up again. She screams at him to get up. Tony sits upright as Erin comes down the stairs, asking him to take over which he does. The next morning, Tony is rattled and tired from the night's occurences. While Tony and Erin fix the equipment, Julia runs off to the bathroom to be sick. Sam follows her and sees when she comes out she has a pregnancy test box in her hand. She says she was just making sure, and isn't pregnant. Sam states he isn't ready for a family, which Julia acknowledges and tells him that's the reason she turned down his proposal. Julia leaves the room upset. With Sam alone in the room the bathroom door opens on its own, making him look. Tony startles him asking him to watch the tape from last night. The group watch back the tape which shows the camera turning. Sam is still skeptical, while Tony wants to leave. The girls refuse, and say that either they all leave or no one does. Sam sticks by Julia, causing Tony to go outside for fresh air. Tony discovers the car door open, closing it but not telling the others. From the second storey window, the woman watches him. As the camera angle shifts, she is gone when it comes back into frame. Sam tries to rationalise with the girls that Frank or someone else is commiting the murders and events happening. Erin and Julia dismiss the idea, and decide to run an EVP session. Tony and Erin go into town to get supplies for it, leaving Sam and Julia by themselves. Sam tries to show compassion, asking Julia if she wants another test to be sure but she brushes him off. Later that night, Sam and Julia talk about their disagreement. Sam says he wants to do things right; get married first then have a family. Julia agrees with him, and asks him to forget about it. They start to make out on the couch, but are interupted when Julia sees a dead Carrie in Sam's place. She screams and pushes Sam away, crying. They sit outside on the porch waiting for the others to come home. When they finally arrive, Erin tells them that Carrie was found dead in the creek yesterday. Tony urges to leave again, but Julia says she needs to stay. Tony tries to get Sam to agree, but he sticks with Julia again. The group set up the EVP session with the supplies gathered and start. Julia leads the session asking for any spirits to make contact. After getting no response, she tries again. Tony sees on the camera the woman with the cloth face covering approaching and touching Julia before all the candles go out. She's then possessed by the woman, with black eyes and veins. She starts to strangle Sam, then Julia when she tries to intervene. She only stops when Tony hits her over the head with a glass. With Julia knocked out, the group try to come up with a plan. They play back the EVP and tape together, seeing the woman. Tony starts freaking out again, and walks away from the group and into Julia who is standing next to the door. She looks at him, and he becomes eerily calm. He walks outside and mimics Julia's movements, setting himself on fire with the petrol for the generator. Erin and Sam, after hearing the door close, get up and watch Julia not realising until its too late what she's doing. Erin and Sam agree to leave, trying to wake Julia up as she appears catatonic. They help her out to the car, which doesn't start. They attempt to leave on foot, but the further they get from the house the weaker Julia gets. They return to the house to save Julia, having no other option. To warm her back up, they put her into the bath. Erin reveals to Sam that the real reason they came was that Julia's missing mother was seen in the area 3 years ago. Julia was hoping to find out what happened to her. Erin goes to reveal more, but Julia begins to mimic both of them. She then grabs Erin and kisses her, before attempting to drown her in the tub. Sam tries to help, but is pushed away. Erin manages to knock Julia out again. They get Julia dressed and on the couch, leaving her there while they go outside to make a plan. While they talk, Julia gets up and goes into the bathroom. Sam notices and rushes back inside to find Julia back to normal. She has no memory of what has happened since the EVP session, and cuts Sam off when he goes to tell her what's happened. She reveals that she's actually pregnant. Sam, still rattled from the events of the night, says they need to get Erin to explain everything that's happened. Julia asks if she told him about then dating in high school. Sam gets upset and tells her what she's done over the night, and that she keeps lying. Erin walks in, leading to Sam leaving the room and Erin telling her that she told him about her mum. The three sit down to discuss the lies. Sam accuses Erin of trying to get back with Julia, and is upset he was never told. Julia apologises for lying; about Erin, the baby and her mum. Sam, still upset, says they just need to leave. Erin counters that town is 10 miles away, and they don't know that Julia can make it. Sam says they should just burn the house down, which the girls say no to. Sam opens the door to the sheriff standing there, who comes in and explains the family backstory. Julia's mum is actually the other girl who was there the day the pastor's son drowned. It was her older sister that went missing. The wife blamed the girls for her son's death, leading to Julia's grandparents going to the church and killing the couple as they suspected they'd taken their daughter. The sheriff's father, who was the sheriff at the time, went into the mines underneath the church and found the pastor's son, Jesse, soaking in the blood of the older sister. He was missing his ring and pinky finger, and it appeared the wife was performing a ritual on him. When he returned with help, the body was gone. Sam realises that Frank is Jesse, remembering he has the same missing fingers. At that moment, they hear Frank's truck pulling up. Telling the girls to stay inside, Sam and the sheriff go to investigate. Losing sight of him, the sheriff is shot through the neck with an arrow killing him. Sam makes it back inside and tells them what happened. At the same time, Frank/Jesse puts the sheriff's body in his truck. Sam decides to finish things, grabbing an axe from the cupboard and running out. Frank however is already driving away. Julia asks what Sam is going to do now, which he says he's going to burn down the house. With Erin still inside, Julia yells for her to come out. Erin slowly comes out, but is pulled back in by an unseen force. She's then pulled into the bedroom where the woman stands, and the door slams shut. The kitchen door won't open for them to get back in, then suddenly everything goes quiet. Julia opens the door to find Erin dead on the dead, slashed to death. Julia collapses to the floor crying, and Sam comforts her before they are both knocked out by Frank with the axe. Coming to, Sam is tied up to some wood and Julia is in a bathtub. Julia wakes up and starts screaming, alerting Frank who comes in. Frank's mother/The wife comes up inside the bathtub and takes her face cover off, showing that her face was disfigured in the fire. Frank then gives her a knife, which she uses to stab Julia in the stomach. After removing some of her intestines, she removes her fetus and eats it. She then slits Julia's throat. Frank then joins his mother in eating Julia and bathing in her blood, disgusting Sam. Carrie then appears next to Sam, telling him to leave. He gets out of his bindings and runs. On his way out, he sees the dead body of Carrie's daughters. He exits the mine shaft and hides in the back of Frank's pick up, having no other hiding spots. Frank gets in his car and starts driving down the highway. Not sure where he is or what to do, Carrie appears again and tells Sam to jump. He jumps out of the back, and after Frank continues driving, starts walking down the highway. He's found in the morning by a random man as he walks down the highway. He's missing a shoe and covered in blood. The man eventually gets Sam into his truck after he resists, clearly traumatised and uncooperative. The man tells him he'll get him to town, before being run down by Frank's truck. Frank then approaches the car, and pulls Sam out. The movie then cuts to a title card and ends.
