- The port city of Bristol, England, in the 1800s is home to Java Head, a sailing ship line company. The owner has two sons. One, a handsome seafarer, is in love with a local girl, but cannot marry her due to a long-running feud between their fathers. After a lengthy voyage, he returns with a very exotic, noble Chinese wife, which scandalizes the conservative town.

Summoned to attend him, an ambitious young doctor realises that here is a great opportunity. He revives the King and, tremendously impressed, the King takes him back to Copenhagen. A love affair develops between the doctor and the Princess - but it is to have terrible consequences.

Well paced acting with some quite amusing lines, together with some reasonably good song and dance make this amusing Ealing Studio production worth a viewing.

The two continue to meet chastely for several years, with Marwood's behaviour becoming ever more selfish and insufferable in the interim, until her husband finally becomes suspicious and accuses her violently of the adultery she has not in fact committed, provoking her to leave him for the man she loves. Meanwhile, the invalid's every whim is catered to by the mysterious well-educated footman Simpson, who is apparently prepared to put up with anything from his employer. But Marwood falls genuinely ill, and Daventry is the only doctor in England who may be able to save him... and the footman has a secret of his own...
