This is the infamous "Announcerless Game," which was an experiment by NBC in an attempt to boost ratings. The game between the Jets and Dolphins was the two teams last game of the season, as both teams had been eliminated from play-off contention. As this was the scheduled game to be broadcast nationally, NBC chief Don Ohlmeyer decided to experiment with the broadcast format to create interest, foregoing announcers and increasing the use of microphones near the field to pick up the sounds of the game.
