For a silent movie, music plays an important part in it, with a private music recital and a public orchestra performance giving the mood for two scenes. Most significantly, music records with three different types of music are prominently displayed in the hands of two main actors, and are intrinsic to the story development.
According to film historian Kevin Brownlow's book "Behind the Mask of Innocence," the scene where Sally (Bebe Daniels) and Beth (Gloria Swanson) fight over Robert's sickbed was based upon an actual quarrel between two of Cecil B. DeMille's mistresses, Julia Faye and Jeanie Macpherson. In this case, Macpherson threw not acid but ink.
