Love's Boomerang is another casualty in the list of lost silent films. This 1922 British film was distributed by Famous Players-Lasky British Producers and has the distinction of Alfred Hitchcock designing the inter-title cards. Ann Forrest starred in this crime/drama film along with David Powell, John Miltern, Roy Byford, Florence Wood, Geoffrey Kerr and noted American silent film actress, Lillian Walker. The story is about an artist adopting a 12 year old orphan girl, Perpetua, played by Bunty Fosse as a child, then Ann Forrest plays her as a young woman. Living happily in France working in a circus, Perpetua is recognized by a conniving swindler. He blackmails the girl into marrying a drunkard friend of his who has willed him his fortune. The friend is poisoned and poor Perpetua is suspected and sent to prison. However, the swindler confesses the crime and Perpetua is exonerated. The swindler ends up murdered by a former accomplice and ex-con, and the now free Perpetua professes her love for the man who adopted her. As an silent film enthusiast myself, I find the loss of Love's Boomerang a heartbreaking one.
  • The 23 year old Alfred Hitchcock learnt to storyboard a project in this film as well as to fully realise a story visually. Unfortunately, Famous Players Lasky did not teach him how to write a story, but they empowered him with the imagination to use the camera as a paintbrush.
