On the strength of her performance in this film, Ball was offered a contract at MGM. In about 15 years, Ball, along with her husband Desi Arnaz, would own RKO.

RKO had sought Barbara Stanwyck and Jean Arthur for the lead in this picture, thinking Lucille Ball was not a big enough star. But producer Damon Runyon insisted Ball be given the lead.
