- Ludwig Schlemmer: He wants grandchildren.
- Cindy Kimbell: Do you want grandchildren, Ludwig?
- Ludwig Schlemmer: Me? All I want is a career. I want to see my name up in lights. I can see it now: Ludwig Schlemmer.
- Cindy Kimbell: Ludwig, I'm about to make you a very happy man. I don't want to marry you.
- Ludwig Schlemmer: You don't?

- Richard Belrow Livingston III: Ludwig, what are you doing here?
- Ludwig Schlemmer: Please, I've changed my name. It's Lionel.
- Richard Belrow Livingston III: Lionel? Sit down. Tell me, Lionel, what are you doing here?
- Ludwig Schlemmer: I have to see Miss Bellmount. That is, I want to tell her that I'm available.
- Richard Belrow Livingston III: Available for... what?
- Ludwig Schlemmer: For the stage. And I'm ready right this minute.
- Richard Belrow Livingston III: Lionel, you sure that's what you want to do?
- Ludwig Schlemmer: I'm sure. I know all about the hard work and disappointments, but I don't care.
- Richard Belrow Livingston III: What about your friends... your family in Duck Creek?
- Ludwig Schlemmer: I've outgrown Duck Creek. New York is the place for me.
- Richard Belrow Livingston III: The stage is a pretty tough business, and New York is a pretty big place. It's filled with a lot of people who've never heard of you. In Duck Creek, everybody knows you; everybody likes you.
- Ludwig Schlemmer: Just wait till I get to the top. Everybody'll know me right here in New York.
