- Victor Scott: [answering the phone] Mr. Scott's office.
- [pause]
- Victor Scott: No, this is not the Safeway Cleaners and Dryers!
- [hanging up]
- Victor Scott: Some idiot wants his pants pressed.
- Miss Hinkel: Maybe we oughta get a new number.
- Victor Scott: No, not so fast. We may be pressing pants yet!
- Allen Parker: Then it's all settled? They won't prosecute me?
- Victor Scott: No.
- Allen Parker: You're not going to keep all of my $10,000?
- Victor Scott: Your $10,000? You stole it; I earned it!
- Allen Parker: But that's all I got. You wouldn't take everything I have, would you?
- Victor Scott: You can get out of town and keep going before you lose more than money.
- Victor Scott: Well, every time you go into a courtroom, it's a gamble.
- Frank Garland: I'm the house, Victor. I never gamble!
- Victor Scott: As for me, I'd rather see a hundred guilty men go free than convict another innocent man.
- Ellen Miles: I thought you said you were a fighter.
- Victor Scott: I am. But, I am not a killer.
- Joseph Carter: I'm through with mouthpieces. They take the fees, and I take the rap! Ahh!
- Victor Scott: Go on, take the rap. I forgot that free advice was never worth the money.
- Victor Scott: The real credit belongs to my assistant, Miss Miles. She really prepared the case.
- Reporter: How about a story from you, Miss Miles?
- Ellen Miles: Well, you can quote me as saying, "All I did was hold his coat."
- Victor Scott: I've been too busy to be human. And I'm not going to start kissing babies - or anybody else.
- Ellen Miles: That was dirty! Ray's hungry as a bear.
- Victor Scott: No he isn't. He just wants to be with you. Unfortunately, to him, so do I.
- Ellen Miles: You say the nicest things, but never in writing.
- Victor Scott: That's my legal trade.
- Ellen Miles: Bachelor trade, you mean.
- Victor Scott: What have you done?
- Allen Parker: I've - taken $90,000.
- Victor Scott: You're an embezzler.
- Allen Parker: I didn't mean to steal it. I only borrowed it. I was going to put it right back.
- Victor Scott: Well, what have done with it? Play the market?
- Allen Parker: Me, play the market? Certainly not. It was the horses.
- Victor Scott: All of it?
- Allen Parker: There was - a woman.
- Victor Scott: Yes, naturally.
- Ralph Ford: Mr. Scott seems to forget very quickly that he once sat at this desk.
- Victor Scott: Oh, you're wrong. I'll never forget it. However, if you want to lock horns with me, maybe you wish I could. Every time you sit there and have a thought, just remember, I sat there and had it before you.
- Victor Scott: You know why I could never indict you? Because nobody would talk. Why wouldn't they? Because you own them body and soul. Well, you're not going to own me. Nobody is.
- Victor Scott: Do you want some other lawyer poking into this thing? Turning up all the evidence he can find, no matter whom it hurts? I know how to keep on safe ground. I'm not just defending Ellen Borden, I'm defending *you*.
- Frank Garland: I want you to know, Victor, that you'll be paid very well for this case. Which ever way it turns out.
- Victor Scott: [on the phone] Listen carefully, emergency. Put me through to the death house at the state prison. Fast!
- Victor Scott: You're looking at Victor Scott, private citizen, from here on out. I'm going to set myself up a nice little civil practice. Get rich shuffling big corporation contracts from one draw to another. I'm going to have money in my hands. Not people's lives.
- Victor Scott: You shouldn't have come. A big mistake.
- Ellen Miles: There's some hot coffee coming. And then you're going to have to get out of these wet clothes.
- Victor Scott: Women are so practical. I always say that women are practical. Now, Ellen, you be practical.
