Michelle Latour
- Michelle Latour: [Paul is driving Michelle in car. He is underage] Where do you get them?
- Paul Harrison: What?
- Michelle Latour: The cars!
- Paul Harrison: I steal them.
- Michelle Latour: Stop it, Paul. Let's go back! You'll get into trouble.
- Paul Harrison: I'm always in trouble; I'm thinking of taking it up professionally.
- Paul Harrison: [after having sex the night before] Michelle...
- Michelle Latour: [Michelle is fishing in the pond near their cottage while Paul is smoking a pipe] Sh-h-h.
- Paul Harrison: Michelle, last night...
- Michelle Latour: Sh-h-h.
- Paul Harrison: What if you find you're going to have a baby?
- Michelle Latour: I am going to have a baby.
- Paul Harrison: What?
- Michelle Latour: Sh-h-h. Of course I am.
- Paul Harrison: But you can't be sure? I mean it doesn't always happen... not every time.
- Michelle Latour: Well, it 'appened this time.
- Paul Harrison: But how do you know?
- Michelle Latour: I know, that's all...
- Michelle Latour: [Michelle asks Paul inquisitively] You don't mind, do you?
- Paul Harrison: I don't know. Well, do you?
- Michelle Latour: It's the most wonderful thing that has ever 'appened to me.
- Paul Harrison: Is it?
- Michelle Latour: Of course it is. You... and me and a baby. What could be better than that? Can you think of anything better?
- Paul Harrison: No, I can't. You're right! It's wonderful. It's ours!
- Michelle Latour: I always wanted a real baby.
- Paul Harrison: ...a real baby.
- Michelle Latour: [Michelle is in labor] 'elp me, 'elp me, I can't do it!
- Paul Harrison: I'm going for help! I'm going to fetch help!
- Michelle Latour: It's coming down! Paul, where are you? Vite! Where are you going?
- Paul Harrison: No where. Are you alright?
- Michelle Latour: Of course I am.
- Michelle Latour: [Michelle looks straight at Paul who is beside her] You're at the wrong end...
- [the final farewell - the Police are awaiting Paul's arrival to pick him up at his work place]
- Paul Harrison: Bye-bye Sylvie.
- Michelle Latour: Bye-bye.
- Paul Harrison: See you tonight.
- Michelle Latour: Say goodbye to Daddy.
- Michelle Latour: [Michelle turns her attention from Sylvie to Paul] Bye-bye, you seelly bahstard.
- Song lyrics: [Elton John begins to sing as Michelle waves with her tiny fingers at Paul. Paul does cartwheels as he heads to work...] Out there there's not a sound to be heard, / And the seasons seem to sleep upon their words, / As the waters freeze up with the summer's end. / Oh, it's funny how young lovers start as friends. / Yes, it's funny how young lovers start as friends.
- Michelle Latour: Tell me about your father.
- Paul Harrison: I don't want to talk about him.
- Michelle Latour: Why not?
- Paul Harrison: Oh, he's such a silly bastard.
- Michelle Latour: What does that mean: "seelly bahstard"?
- Paul Harrison: Just a fool.
- Michelle Latour: A fool!
- Paul Harrison: Un idiot. Let's sit.
- Michelle Latour: "Seelly bahstard." Is that right?
- Paul Harrison: Near enough.
- Michelle Latour: I want to learn good Engleesh. You will teach me some more?
- Paul Harrison: [Paul recites a poem by Richard Le Gallienne as the couple walks through the woods] I meant to do my work today, / but a brown bird sang in the apple tree...
- Michelle Latour: I know that one, too!
- Paul Harrison: / And a butterfly flitted across the field...
- Michelle Latour: / And all the leaves were calling me.
- Paul Harrison: / And the buttercups nodded their smiling heads, / Greeting the bees who came to call, / And I asked the lizard the time of day, / As he sunned himself on a moss-grown wall. / And the wind went sighing over the land, / Tossing the grasses to and fro, / And a rainbow held out its shining hand - / So what could I do but laugh and go?
- Michelle Latour: [Paul and Michelle sitting down in a field of flowers] My mother died when I was born. / I lived with my father on our own, / And we had a cottage where we'd go, / And he died too. / Now I am alone.
- Michelle Latour: [pause] That's a poem, too. I made it up, but it's true. Now it's your turn.
- Paul Harrison: My mother's run way. / My father has a lot of money. That's all.
- Paul Harrison: [Paul picks a yellow flower and gives it to Michelle] Poor Michelle.
- Michelle Latour: Poor Paul... rich Paul... poor little rich boy!
- Paul Harrison: [Paul and Michelle finish filling the bathtub for Michelle's bath] Enough?
- Michelle Latour: Yes, Son.
- Paul Harrison: [Michelle undresses to her bra and panties] Alright, you can get in now. Go on, get in.
- Michelle Latour: Go and put some wood in the stove please.
- [Paul leaves or so it seems while Michelle blows out the lamp on the mantle and takes off the rest of her clothes - Paul has been watching her undress all along - Michelle is blushing and embarrassed and shakes her head]
- Michelle Latour: Seelly bahstard.
- Paul Harrison: Nice and hot?
- Michelle Latour: Yes, Son.
- Paul Harrison: [Paul has brought in a giant scrub brush] Right. Now, it's my turn.
- Michelle Latour: [Paul starts scrubbing Michelle's back very energetically] Paul! Stop Paul, your 'urting me! Stop, please.
- Paul Harrison: Alright.
- [Paul begins to soap Michelle's back with his hands - It brings out feelings in Michelle that she can't quite fathom - Paul is experiencing something, too]
- Paul Harrison: That better?
- Michelle Latour: That's enough...
- [Paul is holding the scrub brush in his hand and starts blowing lots of bubbles over Michelle in the bathtub - innocence is restored... the scene ends in a very charmingly sweet way]
- Michelle Latour: [Michelle is having her baby] Come on baby...
- [Michelle pushes hard]
- Michelle Latour: Come on, you seelly bahstard.
- [she pushes again]
- Michelle Latour: Being bloody difficult.
- Paul Harrison: I can see him. I can see his head. He's coming. I've got him. He's out! He's enormous.
- Michelle Latour: Paul, is he a boy?
- Paul Harrison: I don't know.
- Michelle Latour: Well, look!
- Paul Harrison: He's a girl!
- Michelle Latour: I always wanted a girl.
- Paul Harrison: So did I...
- Michelle Latour: [Michelle sees her baby for the first time] Why is she crying?
- Paul Harrison: I don't know. She's just lying there.
- Michelle Latour: Please show her to me. Is she beautiful?
- Paul Harrison: I don't know.
- [Paul gives the baby to Michelle]
- Paul Harrison: Is she pretty?
- Paul Harrison: [Michelle is smiling ear to ear] She's beautiful... She's so beautiful.
- Paul Harrison: [Paul and Michelle in bed conversing with one another] I've been thinking... we have to find a hospital where you're not known.
- Michelle Latour: 'ospital?
- Paul Harrison: To have the baby...
- Michelle Latour: I'm not going to 'ospital.
- Paul Harrison: But you can't have it here.
- Michelle Latour: Why not?
- Paul Harrison: The Doctor would find out about us!
- Michelle Latour: Paul... You don't need a doctor to have a baby.
- Paul Harrison: What?
- Michelle Latour: Sometime a midwife come, but if not, well... you just 'ave it.
- Paul Harrison: But you can't have a baby just like that, without anyone to help you... can you?
- Michelle Latour: I think so. Anyway, you'll be 'ere... so you can 'elp me.
- Paul Harrison: Me-e-e!
- Michelle Latour: Why not!
- Paul Harrison: I don't know anything about having babies!
- Michelle Latour: You'll 'ave to find out then, won't you?
- Paul Harrison: Michelle, something might go wrong.
- Michelle Latour: Nothing will go wrong.
- Paul Harrison: But it might... you said your Mother died when you were born.
- Michelle Latour: That was différent! She was quite old. She was 28!
- Paul Harrison: Oh...
- Michelle Latour: [Paul kisses Michelle] And you can't do that anymore.
- Paul Harrison: I wasn't going to!
- Michelle Latour: [Paul and Michelle have finished filling a steel bathtub with buckets of hot water from the fireplace - Paul is wearing nothing but his undershorts] Alright, you can get in now. Get in.
- Paul Harrison: [Paul wants Michelle to leave the room] Would you go and fetch me the soap?
- [Michelle goes, Paul undresses, backs into the bathtub. Michelle returns with a scrub brush and a bar of soap to bathe him]
- Paul Harrison: I can do that.
- Michelle Latour: No you can't.
- Paul Harrison: [Michelle scrubs Paul's back vigorously] Hey, steady on.
- Michelle Latour: You've got to be clean!
- Paul Harrison: I'll be raw!
- [Michelle accidentally drops the soap into the tub. Looking upward towards the ceiling with a visage of determination, Michelle industriously starts to hunt for the soap]
- Paul Harrison: I'll find it!
- [starts scrubbing Paul's chest]
- Paul Harrison: I can do the rest. Will you go and fetch me a towel, please?
- Michelle Latour: [Michelle gets up and starts to leave the room] B-a-b-y!
- Paul Harrison: Then it will be your turn.
- Michelle Latour: [Michelle has a look of shock on her face] What!
- Paul Harrison: I'm good at scrubbing, too, you know.
- [Paul smiles at Michelle; Michelle manages to smile back at him]
