Sil de Strandjutter saves a young Swedish girl from a drowning ship. As she is the only survivor, he want to keep her and calls her Lobke, after his own daughter who died shortly after birth. The vicar of Terschelling disagrees with Sil and refuses to baptize the child until after a year.

It's been 13 years since Sil and his family adopted Lobke. The young girl has become quite interested in studying with the vicar. Wietse expresses he aspires a life as a sailor. Jelle is more interested in the local girls, especially Maam.

Wietse objects to making a profit from the spoils of the beach the way his father and brother do. After an argument with Sil he decides to leave home and becomes a sailor.

During a walk at the seaside Jelle and Lobke almost get caught by the tide. On the 6th of December the town celebrates Sunderum and a disguised Jelle dances with Lobke all night until she discovers who he really is. Afterwards Sil forbids him to bother his sister any more.

Jelle expresses his love for his adopted sister Lobke. She refuses him because she harbors feelings for Wietse and asks neighbor Ane India to attach a lock to her bed-place.

Jelle perishes during a daring rescue attempt leaving Sil to blame himself. Maam, who may be pregnant by Jelle, is angry at Lobke whom she thinks stole Jelle away from her.

Wietse has returned home and declares his love for Lobke. However when he learns Maam may be carrying his dead brother's child he feels obliged to marry her.
