I've been chronologically working my way through the films of Marta Meszaros, and while the films that precede Nine Months are all good, this is perhaps the most satisfying one so far. Lili Monori stars as Juli, a factory girl who catches the eye of supervisor Janos (Jan Nowicki). Juli has been in a relationship with a kindly university lecturer and has even had a child with him, but they've separated, and she allows Janos to wheedle his way into her life. It's obvious to the viewer that Janos is a bully and a bum, but the lonely Juli doesn't figure it out until the final reel. Like all Meszaros heroines, Juli is independent and not cowed by men, but Monori's performance is a stellar one, bringing a depth to her character that is missing from earlier Meszaros films. Top notch.
