- In the UK, the BBFC rated the movie X, after imposing cuts to reduce close-up shots of female genitals as well as to edit a scene where a man probes a woman with a penis-shaped loaf of bread and shots of a man throwing phallic-shaped darts at a woman's pubis painted as a target. The BBFC rated the movie 18 for strong sex and nudity, on March 4, 1993, for the Redemption Films VHS edition (later also in DVD) with the running time of 112m. Yet, the BBFC kept 18 rating in November 23, 2004, for the Argent Films fully uncut DVD edition.
- In the USA, the film was distributed by Trans-American (a subsidiary of AIP - American International Pictures) in 1977, re-titled Madam Kitty, and with a prologue to explain the context in which the film is set, and to compensate for the heavy cuts, mostly in the political dialogue, that reduced the running time to 110m. This is the version also distributed in Denmark (rated 16 in theaters and VHS) and in Japan. Blue Underground's DVD release was the first Director's Cut (133m), Not Rated, dubbed in English except some scenes shown with the Italian dialogue and English subtitles.
- The original Italian version (dubbed in Italian) has a running time of 133 minute, directed and edited by Tinto Brass. This version was initially banned in Italy, Germany, and the UK, and presented only in 2003 by Blue Underground in a DVD release, reinstating the cut footage from Tinto Brass's own print, and was presented in Italian with English subtitles. (However, portions of this dialogue existed in English on earlier home video releases of the movie, including the Redemption videocassette.) This director's cut has been released on DVD by Argent Films in the UK, and by Another World Entertainment in Denmark, Njutafilms in Sweden, Voices Music & Entertainment in Norway, and Firebox Records in Finland - with Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish subtitles.
- The Italian premiere running 129m, had cuts by the producers to obtain a distribution visa, including a woman in leather whipping a woman in bondage, and this version was distributed by Titanus in Italy and by 20th Century Fox Film in Germany, the UK (rated X in February 7, 1977) and a few other European countries,
- The West German premiere (also a co-producer of the movie) was cut to 106 minutes. It may be this version that was used for the Greek VHS release.
