While Frieze Los Angeles, Felix and Spring/Break Art Show will certainly be the draw of the international collecting crowd descending upon the city for L.A. Art Week (Feb. 26 to March 3), there are plenty of local artists, galleries and events taking place outside an overcrowded tent or booth that are equally worthy of attention.
THR rounded up some of our favorite art happenings in and around the city — from two psychedelic painters turning their visions into wearable art to a group of Mexican-American artists taking over Jeffrey Deitch Gallery — so you’ll have other nice things to look at when you leave the Frieze VIP section.

Robert M. Young, whose 70-year career included independent and studio documentaries, narrative features, and episodes of Battlestar: Galactica, died Tuesday in Los Angeles at 99. His death was confirmed in a Facebook post by his son.
Two of his films have recently been added to the Library of Congress Film Registry. They include ¡Alambrista! (1977), a film about the life of an undocumented Mexican immigrant, which won the Camera d’Or for best first film at Cannes, and The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, (1982), one of Young’s eight films with actor Edward James Olmos. Based on a true story that inspired a corrido, it tells of a man on the run after a confrontation with police.
Both films are also part of the Criterion Collection.
Those films represented a recurring theme of Young’s career, one which showed his interest in bringing social issues to wider attention.

Paul Simon has been in the Grammy news cycle, partly because his newest album, “Seven Psalms,” is up for Best Folk Album, marking the singer’s first nomination in over 15 years. However, Simon has also been mentioned due to Taylor Swift’s “Midnights.” No, you’re not reading that wrong. Simon is one of only four artists to win the coveted Album of the Year Grammy three times; the others are Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra and Swift. But Swift is looking to break that record this year, so many are revisiting those other three artists and their discographies, perhaps to determine whether Swift has really earned surpassing them in the record books. Simon himself has quite the trio of Aoty winners; they’re very different records both thematically and in terms of his own personal history. His last winner, “Graceland,” officially secured his place in Grammy history.

Wind gusts quivered the tree limbs, rainfall ricocheted off the roads, and in an instant, power cut off at the old Opera House on Elm Street in Camden, Maine, scuttling screenings there at the Camden International Film Festival.
With that mid-September atmospheric outburst, Hurricane Lee did in the scheduled U.S. premiere of Alex Gibney’s new film In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon. Now, the honor of hosting the American debut goes to the Hamptons International Film Festival this Friday, where the documentary screens as the festival Centerpiece (Simon will appear in person there for a conversation moderated by Rolling Stone’s David Fear). On Sunday, the film plays across the pond at the BFI London Film Festival.

Leave it to Paul Simon to look back not with anger but with fussiness. Timed to coincide with his farewell tour, In the Blue Light finds Simon rifling through his back catalog and remaking ten cuts from his post-Garfunkel albums. Given how notoriously meticulous he’s always been, you’d think Simon would have gotten these takes right the first time, but let’s not forget this is someone who released an album with not one but two songs called “Think Too Much.”

To coincide with the final dates of his farewell tour, Paul Simon will release his 14th solo studio album — called “In the Blue Light” — on September 7, Legacy Recordings announced today. The album features new versions, or, as the announcement says, “fresh perspectives on 10 of the artist’s favorite (though perhaps less-familiar) songs” from across Simon’s solo career.
“This album consists of songs that I thought were almost right, or were odd enough to be overlooked the first time around,” Simon said in a statement. “Re-doing arrangements, harmonic structures, and lyrics that didn’t make their meaning clear, gave me time to clarify in my own head what I wanted to say, or realize what I was thinking and make it more easily understood.”
Musicians joining Simon for the re-interpretations include trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, guitarist Bill Frisell, and drummers Jack DeJohnette and Steve Gadd, as well as the chamber ensemble sextet yMusic,...

Thursday’s Project Runway, the last episode before next week’s Season 16 finale, presented the remaining designers with one final twist. But first, we need to talk about Kentaro.
More specifically, we need to rehash Tim Gunn’s trip to Los Angeles, during which Kentaro revealed the b-a-n-a-n-a-s inspiration behind the song he composed for his runway show at New York Fashion Week: “I found a dead cat on the street. After I buried the cat, I put my ear to the ground, and this is the kind of sound I heard.”

Thursday’s Project Runway revealed which designers will show at New York Fashion Week, but you don’t have to wait until the next episode to see their collections.
At the risk of demystifying the show — is that even possible 16 seasons in? — the fashion show was held on Sept. 8, and photos of the finalists’ designs have been readily available online ever since.
The catch, of course, is that it was a blind runway. Those in attendance (including yours truly!) had no idea whose designs they were seeing, and considering only four episodes of Season 16 had aired at the time, the possibilities were many.

Following her near elimination last week, Margarita was determined to rebound on Thursday’s Project Runway — only to immediately find herself back in the danger zone.
The contestants’ final challenge, which would determine the designers showing at New York Fashion Week, was to create a high-fashion look for a woman braving the cold. And unlike Brandon, who apparently grew up in Utah and thrives in such weather, Margarita’s island upbringing left her feeling considerably less prepared. What happened next did nothing to calm her nerves.

The workroom became a war zone on Thursday’s Project Runway, as the five remaining contestants were tasked with designing high-fashion editorial looks inspired by “warrior women.”
Some of the designers, like Kentaro, took a more literal approach (warrior woman = samurai!), while others, like Margarita, went with a more high-concept design… only for the final product to come out as the most literal cliché of all.
I singled out Kentaro and Margarita because, at the risk of cutting directly to the chase, they wound up in the bottom two this week. Kentaro was told that his design — which underwent a...

Even though his impact in front of the camera was rarely felt, the music and mood of Lou Reed has had a staggering influence on film soundtracks through the years. So it’s with heavy hearts that we report the rock pioneer has died at the age of 71.Born in Brooklyn in 1942, he got into song writing early, kicking off his career after university working at novelty records label Pickwick. After befriending John Cale, he formed a band called the Primitives, which would mutate into the Warlocks and then the incredibly influential Velvet Underground, with whom he would have some of his earliest hits.Reed split from the band in 1970 and struck out on his own as a solo singer, producing such memorable albums as Transformer, Berlin and Metal Machine Music.Film-wise, he’s cropped up in movies such as 1980’s One Trick Pony (written by and starring) Paul Simon,...

Last week on Project Runway, we played a weird form of musical chairs: Andrea left! Then Kooan left! Then Raul came back! Then Buffi was eliminated! Then I passed out! Luckily, I think the drama level for this episode will cool slightly back to normal.
Although perhaps not, as we soon learn it’s going to be a group challenge this week, which are always the worst. As evidenced by three of the contestants then saying, “I don’t like working with others! Grrr Hulk Angrryyyy.” Okay, maybe they didn’t say it exactly like that, but it was close. They are full of rage and disappointment already, which is always a great way to start your work day!
On top of that, their primary client is going to be Nina Garcia for Marie Claire magazine. Okay, Marie Claire At Work magazine, which I guess is a thing.

Sofi is climbing the ladder yet again on her new two-part Ep Locked & Loaded, which hit the online charts on production pal and mega-producer Deadmau5’s Mau5trap label just a few weeks ago. Part one of the two-installment Ep includes "Broken Souvenirs' and "Joyride" both collaborations with dubstep collective and fellow Mau5trap signee Millions Like Us. But while part one is making the rounds in due fashion, buzz is building around the second installment of Locked & Loaded, "Bring Out the Devil" and a collaboration with Skrillex and Kill the Noise, which almost disappeared from the album entirely.
“The tragic story is that we recorded the track about a year ago and his hard drive was stolen, his computer, everything he had was stolen in Italy. He called up Kill the Noise and was like, 'Hey, can you save the day and reproduce the track?' And he did,...

Despite his numerically enhanced stage name, math isn't quite the strongest subject for 2010 Vma house artist deadmau5, who released the first bomb from his highly anticipated compilation album 4x4=12 on Sunday.
"My math sucks," the producer told MTV News. "I was talking on Ustream, and I was trying to explain to people about my setup, and I was like, 'Yeah, it's in four banks of four, and that equals 16,' and they were like, 'Dude, that's 12'! Everyone started saying it over and over again, and it just caught on."
Erroneous arithmetic aside, deadmau5 is hoping for big numbers from the album's debut single, "Sofi Needs a Ladder," which hit iTunes on Sunday and Beatport on Monday (November 1).
Starting with a chaotic, white-noise intro, the song builds with the wobbly electro stutter of a synth,...

HollywoodNews.com: Paul Simon is going back to Columbia Records.
After three decades with Warner Music, Simon tells me he’s moving his whole solo catalog back to Sony/Columbia Records. That’s everything from 1972’s “Paul Simon” album through his most recent, “Surprise” CD. As a solo artist Simon was with Columbia Records from 1972 until 1980’s “One Trick Pony.” But he’d also been at Columbia through his entire career as half of Simon & (Art) Garfunkel, from 1965 through 1970, ending with “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
When I ran into Paul last Friday night at Yankee Stadium he told me, “I’ve been trying to get my catalog back in the same place as Simon & Garfunkel for a long time.” He is thrilled that it’s happening.
At the same time, Simon is finishing a new album with long time producer Phil Ramone. “It’s the best work I’ve done in 20 years,...

He's the son of Paul Simon and Peggy Harper, the Silver Girl of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters." At age four, he sang "Bingo" on Sesame Street, at eight, he had a brief appearance in his father's film One Trick Pony, and when he was twelve, he accompanied his famous dad on the Graceland tour, backing him up on guitar. Those are your basic Wiki entries on Harper Simon. But last year, the most important fact was added to his credit list--he independently released an excellent solo debut that established him as one of the best new singer-songwriters in the genre. A while back, Harper Simon and this writer took a tour of the CD bins at Hollywood's Amoeba Records with the premise that we would buy each other three albums that we felt the other needed. That adventure resulted in a...

Ja from Mnpp here. If y'all are familiar with my tastes at all at this point - and if you are, my prayers are with you - then you know I don't hesitate at reveling in garbage. Often. Deeply. That vile and base genre that is the horror film is my true love (and the gorier, the bad-tastier they are, there's a pretty decent chance that I will stand loud and proud to champion them), but I roll around like a pig in muck in all manner of cinematic trash whenever I can. It's a living.
And yet... somehow I'd actively avoided all of Korine's films - at least those he'd directed - for a good long while. Something about them creeped me out. Even if it was just the names. Gummo. Julien Donkey-Boy. They promised split lips and acne scars...
