Sam Peckinpah was originally scheduled to direct at the behest of Richard Harris (both had previously worked together on Major Dundee (1965)). Due to Peckinpah's unofficial blacklist after his erratic behavior on Convoy (1978), he was replaced by John Hough.
This film reunites four cast members from Caveman (1981). Erika Carlson (who played Folg's mate), Ana De Sade ( who played Grot's mate), Miguel Angela Fuentes (who played Grot) and Anais De Melo (who played Meeka.
