American Larry Summers and his wife Kate, star in the TV series "Polaski". In reality, he is a womanising drunk on the brink of a divorce. A local priest asks him to help a woman find her missing boy. While drunk he agrees to be "Polaski".
Trans-Meridian boss Gordon Bridges buys an American religious network. He needs a clean image but is Page 3 girlfriend Cherry is pregnant. Fearing for her life she begs Larry and Kate for help but they learn Bridges is now their new boss.
Larry is guilty for being drunk when stuntman Brad is injured when a motorcycle stunt goes wrong. Blood had been left at Brad's house before the accident. His business partner Georgie appears scared and Billy Gems is muscling in.
Larry is back on the booze when told stop him investigating crime. D.S. Ford asks Larry to see the dead body of Rose Amelia Bonner and try to persuade a witness to come forward. Kate gets kidnapped and Larry shows Ford a bit of TV magic.
Larry and Kate are in Cannes. Larry's old school friend, Solly Granger claims he has a film script. He later admits he stole Mob money, he was taking to Switzerland, and the only way he can escape is to make them believe Larry is the star.
Larry decides to write a better script for "Polaski". He asks writer Colin Day to help but when they stumble on an hit and run, involving a diplomatic car and a young girl left in coma, Larry thinks he can investigate and get a script.
Larry discovers broken down Ferrari and gives the girl at lift to a garage but drives off with her bag. Larry is later run off the road and forced to walk home. The police find the car with a kilo of cocaine in the bag. Larry is arrested.
Kate's father is getting blackmailed, by a crime gang, who say he's had sex with an underage girl, he's never met. Larry makes inquires but suspects he has been set up by his friend Buffy Saunders. Things gets serious when they grab Larry.
