FAQ

Uncle Buck

FAQ

When Bob (Garrett M. Brown) and Cindy (Elaine Bromka) Russell are called to Indianapolis after her father suffers a heart attack, they are forced to ask Bob's brother Buck (John Candy), a bachelor and all around slob, to babysit their three children—rebellious 15/16-year-old Tia (Jean Louisa Kelly), 8-year Miles (Macaulay Culkin), and 6-year-old Maizy (Gaby Hoffmann). Complications arise when Buck's girlfriend Chanice Kobolowski (Amy Madigan) thinks he is making it with amorous neighbor Marcie Dahlgren-Frost (Laurie Metcalf) and when it becomes obvious to Buck that Tia's boyfriend Bug (Jay Underwood) is putting the make on her.

The screenplay for Uncle Buck was written by filmmaker John Hughes, who also directed and produced the movie.

No reason was given other than Tia saying it was because they weren't making enough money in Indianapolis. (The father hinted that something else caused the move when he said "it has nothing to do with what happened")

Uncle Buck forgoes going to a horse racetrack to gamble and calls a reluntant Chanice to ask her to watch Miles and Maizy while he goes looking for Tia who has run away with her boyfriend Bug. Buck crashes a high school party and makes his way to a bedroom where Bug is attempting to have sex with a girl. Thinking it's Tia in there, Buck drills through the doorknob but, when he opens the door, he finds that it's not Tia in bed with Bug. Buck starts to drive home and finds a distraught Tia walking alone. He stops to offer her a ride, and she tells him that everything went the way he predicted it would (it's strongly implied that Tia caught Bug cheating on her after she refused his advances). Buck apologizes for riding her tail all week and asks for her advice with Chanice. When they get home, Tia explains to Chanice how she made it all up about Buck and Marcie and tries to convince her to get back together with Buck, who is listening at the door. Buck suddenly coughs, and Chanice bursts open the door, sending Buck flying across the room. The next morning, Bob and Cindy return from their trip to Indianapolis, Cindy fully expecting to be ranted at by Tia. Instead, Tia flies into her arms and tells her how much she loves her. In the kitchen, Buck grabs the overhanging pot rack and accidentally brings everything crashing to the floor. In the final scenes, the Russells say goodbye to Chanice and Buck, who have reconciled, and Buck off-handedly suggests to Tia that they get together for coffee sometime.
