There's Nothing Out There - 1991
(This Film Rates a B )
Right from the get go you are bombarded with a montage of horror movie posters punching you right in the face as a woman is attacked by an unknown assailant. The killing is done off screen. Flash forward to a group of kids who are out on high school vacation. They drive to a house in the woods for some fun. Mike, a horror film buff relates his whole life to horror films. "He's a walking, talking horror film". He is kind of funny but also tedious and annoying with the overuse of cliches. EVEN the cat scare at the 45 min mark. Anyways, a weird alien reptile creature that is as fake as it comes, kills men and tries to unsuccessfully mate with the women. "This thing controls minds, eats people, reproduces". Well, you can see where this is going. But can you? It's all over the top craziness! There is some good intensity and build even if "it's out there". The script is crap and riddled with bad lines: "Oh my God, a falling cloud" or "I am not fond of back problems, I'll be on the bed when you are ready", "Great this thing is going to have an orgy", and "if this thing came out around Halloween, I would have a hell of a time". There are plenty of "wait, what did I just see" moments such as the heavy metal stoners popping out of nowhere and go skinny dipping? Or jumping through a window into a pond and not a single drop of blood? The mostly electronic soundtrack is perfectly timed. Some T&A and sex. It's an absurd horror film that makes fun of absurd horror films. This is part horror and part comedy, but I am not sure it ever took anything seriously.
