Sarah Thompson is a young and beautiful woman escaping a violent US marriage, fleeing to UK, where she meets the love of her life, and remarries. They settle in France just before WWII, and then her husband drafts into the army.
While William is in the army, Sarah starts buying the local's jewelry for money. After the war they create a jewelry empire, and the story follows them through thick and thin, for five generations.
