  • Raja Babu review :

"Aa ee oo oo oh. Mera dil naa todo".

Govinda's pelvic thrusts to this iconic song became so notorious that even reputed English magazines covered it lamenting the sad state of Bollywood. A few prudes may have cared but the Indian aam junta lapped up Raja Babu voraciously to make it a super hit at the ticket windows. The rural flavour worked even in the metros like Mumbai. And yup, Govinda was king then..

The 'Sarkailo Khatiya' item number was criticized for its vulgarity but that didnt stop the audience from cheering Karisma Kapoor and Govinda doing those raunchy steps on a desi bed. Personally, I loved this jodi and their onscreen chemistry was sizzling to the hilt. Even in actioners like Muqabla (1993) and Khuddar (1994).

Shakti Kapoor's career got a new lease of life playing the village bumpkin Nandu - Sabka Bandhu. He won the best comedian award that year. After Aankhen (1993), this was another super hit from Govinda - David Dhawan jodi.

Later, David Dhawan tried to repeat the same double entendrè formula in films like Andaz (1994), Eena Meena Deeka (1994) and Yaraana (1995) but unlike Raja Babu, these ventures were rejected by the audience. Even Govinda's Banarasi Babu (1997) with the same theme and a voluptuous Ramya in the main lead, came a cropper at the box office. Well, some formulae only work once!!

    Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.
  • This film could be one of the most underrated film of Bollywood history. This 1994 blockbuster had all of it good performances, music and direction.I remember I was in Allahabad when this movie was running and it was somewhere in March at Holi time , the people there were playing its song "Ooe Amma" at their loudspeakers in highest volume. If someone who likes to watch Some Like It Hot and drools over Marilyn Monroe he should see this movie.Thumbs Up to Govinda. How many of you know that this film was shot in South of India and after Sholay could be one of the very few blockbuter to hit Silver Screen. With films like these Indian comedy could never be dead.

    Warning: Spoilers
Raja Babu is a film directed by David Dhawan which is actually a remake of a Tamil Film Raasukutti written, acted and directed by Bhagyaraj. This film actually came out at a time when the masala ventures were very famous. One hero, a heroine, a comic relief, some villains, a couple of songs, etc.. were some of the ingredients during this era. The story was given the least importance.

Plot: Raja is the son of a wealthy zamindar. When he goes head over heels for Madhu, he tries every way to woo her.

Story and direction: This is one of the most famous combos of David Dhawan and Govinda. I wanted to see this film just for entertainment value. Now if I see the first half of the film, I was quite entertained. It made me laugh the whole time. But it was during the second half that the film got very sour. We have a typical saas-bahu drama going on. I would have been very happy if the comedy flavor was kept. But alas it wasn't. The script takes a very drastic turn at the second half when things actually start to get serious. There is all crying and stuff. If I see a Govinda film I want to be entertained. There are much better films than this.

Acting: It is basically a Govinda film. His antics, style, etc.. all ingredients needed for a typical Bollywood film. Karishma Kapoor has a cute bubbly girl type of image in the film. Shakti Kapoor impressed me actually. His Nandu act was great. I guess he said this was the first film where he did comedy and got recognition. Prem Chopra and Gulshan Grover were in their usual self. Kader Khan and Aruna Irani were good too.

Songs: Now I don't know whether this was song was cut because of its airing on TV, but still I wanted to see the song 'Sarkailiyo Khatiya'. I was missing it. The rest of the songs are great. My favorite would be 'A Aa ee' Worst Scene: Now since I can't name any good scene in the film, let me name a bad one. It would be the climax. It looked like it was rushing to the climatic point of the film. Some stunts were way too atrocious.

Verdict: This is not Govinda's best. Not worst also. It comes in the OK category. As I said before I wish the comedy would be carried till the end, I would have given more.

So for this film I give a 6/10
  • This was my first introduction to the world of Bollywood and I'm now hooked! Okay so it requires adoption of a different mindset to watching US films but once you allow yourself the pleasure of enjoying it for what it is you won't be disappointed. The songs are superb, melodic and very catchy. The actors are visually compelling especially Karisma Kapoor who is surely one of the most beautiful actresses anywhere in the film world. Locations, colour are spellbinding. If you want something different and are looking to be uplifted, cheered up and stimulated I recommend you catch this movie.
  • This is one of my favorite Govinda movies of all time and best film of 1994. David Dhawan does a great job in directing this movie, he makes it funny and adds family drama. Govinda is Excellent as Raja Babu and gives a great performance. Karishma Kapoor is an actress i hate, this film she is a little less annoying but still annoys in some scenes. Kader Khan is a maestro in acting and yet gives a superb performance. Aroona Irani is terrific as the mother and gives a outstanding performance. Shakti Kapoor is brilliant as Nandu the sidekick. This film has Comedy, action, family drama and romance a full on entertainer.
  • well i was a teenager when i saw the movie..the songs were a huge hit but the elite class skipped govinda movies back then coz watching govinda and karishma (aka karizma )movies were not the in thing for that 'class' but anyways a lot of people liked it as the series of these movies rocked the 90's through out and most of them were successful..today i was watching it again after a long time and i remembered, there was a long que of people and the riot they created when the a aa e uo uo o song came on screen....the dresses of govinda and karishma were complimentary to each other(the worst dressing duo of that time) well karisma in the late 90's transformed but govinda has still been very faithful to his designer as his dress sense remains the same...but back then it all blended it was all good ..everything worked and slowly the elite class realized what fun it was missing and then .....there was no looking back for this jodi as it went on n on making those Indian carry on series ..hated by a few but loved by the masses.

if you are looking for a good time with nothing to do rent it or watch it on TV i don't think you will regret it...but remember its the worst at its best ..

still i watch those movies when i get time coz i cant stop laughing...so i say go ahead and have a good time as there are times when we all love stupidity and specially when its done by the kings of their times it surely is watchable ...i recommend it to all movie lovers ...

David Dhawan is known for his work in Comedy Films and why not, the veteran filmmaker has given a number of Super-Hits that were laugh riots.

But, 'Raja Babu' is his finest film to date, and this is not a comedy. This is an emotional film, that talks about love, respect & responsibility. 'Raja Babu' is an enlightening watch from Start to End. Dhawan completely succeeds by holding your attention throughout. The Writing as well the Dialogue are pitch- perfect.

Each and Every Actor performs flawlessly. Govinda is Historic as Raja Babu. The superstar of the 90's proves his caliber once again by delivering a performance that is so neat & clean. Kader Khan & Aruna Irani are remarkable. Karishma Kapoor is good. Shakti Kapoor is lovable as Nandu. Prem Chopra & Gulshan Grover are perfect as the baddies. Others also lend good support.

On the whole, 'Raja Babu' is A True Classic. Without a shed of doubt, Two Big Thumbs Up!
  • Camp with a capital C. Think of Mask and the Ace Ventura movies -- then multiply by 100. This laugh-a-minute entertainer takes schlock to the level of high art. David Dhawan is a genius and Govinda is beyond description. See it over and over again. I insist.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Of course if you are reading my review you have seen this film already. 'Raja Babu' is one of my most favorite characters. I just love the concept of a spoiled brat with a 24*7 servant on his motorcycle. Watch movies and emulate characters etc etc. I love the scene when a stone cracks in Kader khans mouth while eating. Also where Shakti Kapoor narrates a corny story of Raja Babu's affairs on a dinner table and Govinda wearing 'dharam-veer' uniform makes sentimental remarks. Thats my favorite scene of the film. 'Achcha Pitaji To Main Chalta Hoon' scene is just chemistry between two great Indian actors doing a comical scene with no dialogs. Its brilliant. It's a cat mouse film. Just watch these actors helping each other and still taking away the scene from each other. Its total entertainment. If you like Govinda and Kader Khan chemistry then its a must. I think RB is 6th in my list by David Dhawan. 'Deewana Mastana', 'Ankhein','Shola or Shabnam', 'Swarg', Coolie no 1' precedes this gem of a film. 7/10.
  • One of my favourite actor, Great comedy, Govinda best comedy actor
