Honoré de Balzac's novel was previously adapted as a 5-hour "Masterpiece Theatre" British miniseries, Cousin Bette (1971), which aired on PBS in 1972 and was directed by Gareth Davies starring Margaret Tyzack in the lead role with Helen Mirren in an early career role.
Two earlier versions of this Honoré de Balzac work were filmed-both from France. The first was a silent black/white La cousine Bette (1928). The second was a black/white La Cousine Bette (1964) filmed for television.
