  • For a movie that plunges into its thin story without introducing any characters, motives, or the scene, If I Die actually manages to create an air of dread from the start, but unfortunately tapers off to a conventional ending.

If I Die Before I Wake has a simple shoestring plot - three redneck burglars break into a suburban home and hold the family hostage, torturing them. In fact, they are tortured for the first third of the movie (the runtime is 72 minutes), and its quite a disturbing bevy of screams and pleading from the family that is successful in building a nightmarish tension.

From then on, we follow daughter Stephanie Jones as she maneuvers (sometimes incredulously) past and hides from their captors. While the script consists of routine dialogue and sometimes monotonous reworkings of Jones eluding her tormentors, it often surprises with the unexpected deaths of some major characters and one chillingly scripted scene in which one of the burglars peruses around with the little girl, mimicking the actions of her father from the home videos they are watching in the living room.

Director Katkin partially succeeds in delivering a cheap but genuinely creepy horror film in the first half by wallowing in torture and masochism, he missteps from then on last and falls prey to script conventions. Still, If I Die Before I Wake is worth a look if only for the unflinching terror inflicted on the innocent suburban family.

Well, this is not a first class-movie at all. The plot seems also to be missing here, why did they come into that house?, for what?, what were they looking for? Questions you won't get an anwser on. Besides this movie was quiet dark, like the camera had just not the right coloring. Sounds and Videoquality are way below. The movie itself wasn't quiet Thrilling, and things don't seem to fit. Like one of the guys saw the girl in a room, they went in the room and after not finding her they left the room. the same happens 30 minutes after, The girl is looking downstairs and of the the guys is coming from behind, if you can see, he is able to see her sitting on the floor. Acting is very sad, ann not realistic. I'm suggesting you not to buy the movie, but if you still like to see this one, rent it.

This movie is one of my personal favs. for a third date. the girl is so unnerved by the movie she wants for me to stay so she is not alone. the raw hand hand-held cam shots help. and the fact that they give no back story to the family of the robbers makes it so much more creepy, they're your family, getting raped and murdered in front of your eyes. but this is a movie you need to rent first. It is not for everyone. but I love it. If it can make me lock my door, It should make anyone. I don't get creeped out at movies, but this one does. It hits you at home, were your sister sleeps, were your mother sleeps, It finds that raw nerve and and keeps drilling it. don't watch this movie expecting blood and guts this is the wrong movie. watch this for a primal fear that you can't escape. I watched this movie 3 years ago and still think about it a lot. the acting is good.
  • This was one of the most suspenseful direct-to-video thrillers I have seen in quite a while.

The movie starts off with three intruders breaking into a house while the family sleeps and picks up wonderfully from there.

If I Die Before I Wake, was one of those films where the situation could happen to anybody and that's where it's appeal comes from. This movie centers around a teenage girl living in the house and how she deals with whats going on. Her main focus are to of course, get out of the house, keep herself and little sister hidden, and to protect her family who are meanwhile being tortured and beaten.

The movie had a great load of suspense for the first twenty minutes but then winds down as the lead character is forced with split-second decisions. However, the end sequences pick up with intensity leading to a hard-hitting climax.

The acting was especially good with the teenage girl comparable to Marilyn from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

There wasn't much violence or gore so don't rent this looking for a massacre. Do rent this though if you want to be thrilled and at the edge of your seat. 6/10

A gang of psychos break into a house one dark night. They find the mother, father and son...but fail to realize that the two girls in the family LoriBeth (a teenager) and her little sister heard them and are hiding. The gang begins to torture the family--the son is beaten up pretty brutally as are the mother and father. Can LoriBeth save her family?

This is a very unpleasant little film. It disturbed and horrified me but it IS a horror film so I guess it did its job. But the violence in the movie just goes overboard--there's rape, murders, torture...nothing much is shown but the sounds tell you everything. There's no reason given for them breaking into the house, but I guess that's the point. It's just showing how this could happen to anyone at anytime. But it starts to fall apart at the end. Up until the last 15 minutes or so it's logical. Then logic disappears (where did all the food from the refrigerator disappear to when T.J. threw it out?), people start doing REAL stupid things (LoriBeth goes up the chimney when she could have gone out the front door!) and it ends on a totally unrealistic note. Also the fate of two characters is left up in the air. Still 95% of the film works...and that's better than you can say for most horror films these days.

The acting is good--making it even harder to watch. Stephanie Jones is very good as LoriBeth and Muse Watson is downright terrifying as Daryl. It's also nice to see Michael McCleery as T.J.--I remember him from "Mother's Day" another very unpleasant 1980 horror movie.

So--unpleasant and far from perfect...but it DOES work for most of the way. I give it a 7.
  • Take this comment as a WARNING.

This movie was all around poorly directed and poorly scripted. It's a wonder how easy it is to direct a movie these days. Movie is all about the direction. This had none.

The main character, LoriBeth (Jones), was running around in circle --inside the house, up the chimney (yes it's true!), outside the house, back in the house, up the chimney again, outside the house, then, inside the house...

Actually, if I can say one positive thing, Stephanie Jones' acting was not that bad. She was just made to look like an idiot. Why didn't she use the shotgun when she could have? Hmm...maybe using a cut piece of glass is more effective...

    This was no thrill...just frustration.
  • Three scumbags love breaking into house. One of them (Muse Watson) is stone psycho.

They break into a house where the family is home. The terror begins with constant beating and yelling. Only the two girls (Stephanie Jones & Coryanne Sennett) managed to hide.

Jones is fantastic as the older sister trying to figure out what to do while keeping her little sister quiet.

It is non stop as the thieves hunt for her and she tries everything to defeat them.

No gore, and rape occurs off-camera.
  • Damn, this movie is so poorly made and so cheap, it loses all potential impact it could have had. Performances may be good all around, but nobody involved is able to save this turkey. Lot's of violence, but surprisingly little blood. Wes Craven's "Last House on the Left" started it all 30 years ago and the world has seen LOTS of bad Rip-Offs, but I seriously think this one is the worst. Better watch the original, of which I always tought of as a pretty good movie...
  • I'm still holding my breath from this outstanding thriller!! What a fantanstic job Brian Katkin did in this sleeper hit. I can't rememeber how long it has been since a movie scared me. This one gets your attention from the start and never lets up. I actually considered turning it off about half way through because I was that horrified. I wasn't sure if I could take much more of the terror! I certainly was glad that I didn't. Katkin shows that a great scare can still be done without expensive "tricks" of computer effects. This is just a well done, good old fashion journey into fear. It is directed as good as the best of the best thrillers!

What helps make this so believable is this a crime that could happen to any of us at any time! I don't want to ruin anything by revealing the story. Just lock your windows and doors and allow yourself to let the movie take you for a ride. You'll be rewarded with a adrenaline pumping thrill as good as anything I have ever experienced. And I have to mention that Stephanie Jones was incredible. She does a 10 plus job of acting. She allows us to feel the horror she feels through the entire film. Also, the camera work was some of the best I've seen in this genre. It captures the fear perfectly, constanting taking us to the edge.

If you like a good scare, don't miss this one.

I rented this movie a few years back on DVD just out of random curiosity, and I was hammered. The movie is about a group of three criminal brother who go around breaking into people's homes - but this particular time, the resident's are still in the house. They take the family hostage and what unfolds is a non-stop line or brutality on an average American family in Ohio. The clever eldest daughter spends the night lurking around the house trying to save her family. The mother is brutally raped, the brother and father killed, and the youngest daughter terrorized. But they'd better watch out for LoriBeth. She's a smart girl.

This movie is gory and will absolutely get your pulse pounding!
  • This is one freaky movie that tells the story of three intruders breaking into a family's home and holding them hostage. It also shows pretty graphically what some people might actually do in this sort of situation. It is intense and over all frightening. Although some of my family members found it too violent for them to stomach, if you can put up with a lot of violence, then you're in for one scary ride of a movie. 5/5
  • I have to admit, I had second thoughts after renting this one, but I said what the hell. I was really surprised at how this movie turned out. The drama picked up really early on, and didn't let up at all until the very end. You don't have to sit through a bunch of love scenes or stupid s**t like that, just jumps right into the action. Yeah, some might call this a "girl power" movie, but who's complaining? Nothing wrong with that to me. Some of LoriBeth's actions I question, being in that situation, but hey, it's a movie for crying out loud!! Really good flick.
  • Director Brian Katkin has created a gem in If I Die Before I Wake.

    Starring Stephanie Jones.

Also starring Muse Watson who has also been in other classic flicks, Frankenfish 2004, Dead Birds 2004 and From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money 1999.

Also starring Michael McCleery who has also been in other classic flicks, Road Kill 2001 and L. A. Confidential 1997.

    I enjoyed the violence.

If you enjoyed this as much as I did then check out other classic home invasion flicks, Black Christmas 1974, A Clockwork Orange 1971, The Collector 2009, The Dark Hours 2005, The Devil's Rejects 2005, Switchblade Romance 2003, The House on the Edge of the Park 1980, Ils 2006, Inside 2007, Intruder 1989, The Last House on the Left 2009, Self Defense 1983, Enemy Territory 1987, Mother's Day 2010, Kidnapped 2010, The Raid: Redemption 2011, The Aggression Scale 2012, When a Stranger Calls Back 1993, The Purge 2013, You're Next 2011, Panic Room 2002, Don't Breathe 2016, The Strangers: Prey at Night 2018, Hush 2016, The Plumber 1979, Ghostland 2018, In Their Skin 2012, Accused 2023 and The Strangers 2008.
  • This is a low budget movie and proves not all low-budget thrillers are bad. This opens in a dark night and starts immediately with three murderers breaking into a house and terrorizing a poor suburban family. The oldest daughter now realizes this and hides herself and her little sister and decides to devise a plane to get back at the murderers. This movie is excellent, and I'll tell you why. The atmosphere. The atmosphere is so dark, right away we're aware that danger is lurking and it's hitting hard onto this poor family. The darkness and light are all in the right places providing a haunting and chilling atmosphere. For a low-budget movie The directing is great, the camera angles provide great tension and fools us alot. Which is a good point. The acting is pretty good for people that are not major hollywood actors. The main heroine is great and pretty, the villians are great, right away we learn that we have to hate these people. This movie reminded me of "The Desperate Hours" only alot more violent. Another aspect that made this movie on my favorites list is the suspense. The suspense is excellent, it's so gripping and tense. The tension is excellent. There were times where I was on the edge of my seat squirming. I could feel this girls desperation. This succeeds where most Hollywood films fail. It grips the audience by the throat and makes it heard. This is highly, highly, recommended and trust me, if you ever go to a rental store and find this on the rack, for the love of god rent it! rent it! rent it! This is great.

    Warning: Spoilers
Mg, i cant explain how good this movie is.... while it may not be perfect, it makes up for it in ways....

*spoilers* the movie starts off on a happy way, everyones sleeping cep't the son, And there's cheery music playing, then, then the chaos begins, I am only 14 and i have watched this movie, which with average 14 year olds can be a bit, ehhh... mainly because it is very violent, I'm talking, skull bashings ,eye stabbings, rape, and there's even a bit of pedophile mixed in.

Now don't get me wrong this isn't a gore filled massacre but, I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone who cant watch a Friday the 13th movie.

The dialog/acting is pretty good in this movie considering it is a low-budget movie. i was really surprised by the girl who plays Lori Beth she is very convincible, which adds to the chill. also the main thug is very frightening, mainly cuz he is so vulgar.

If u like low budget movies and u want to be scared...RENT THIS but if ur expecting a gore fest rent- something else.
  • This home invasion thriller hits the ground running and doesn't stop until the last frame. The cast was full of names you've never heard of, which made the characters that much more believable. The acting was uniformly great, from the particularly nasty trio of invading brothers to the littlest child victim. The non-stop action keeps attention riveted to the screen...there wasn't one boring moment. The writing is innovative, non-formulaic. Family members you don't expect to die do, one of the bad guys turns out to be unexpectedly kind, and the youngest family member is surprisingly resourceful. If you want a terrific good vs. evil ride, full of suspense and colorful characterizations, this one's for you!
  • This movie was creepy. In a day and age where most movies fall short on charactor, or plot, this basic one location, small cast film surpasses most big-budget films. It involves a family taken hostage by 3 convicts(one looks like a Micky Rourke\Tully Blanchard hybrid). They proceed to tourture the family while the daughter and little girl hide. Its worth the rental if you can find it. It is creepy.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Contains SPOILERS! Never before have I seen a movie where I felt involved. The lead actress gives such a good performance, that when she came out from behind the door swinging that bat, I was swinging right along with her. This movie starts it's suspense one minute into it's run time and does not let up on you for the rest of it's 73 minutes. One of the VERY few straight to video movies that deserved a theatrical run. Run to your video store to pick up this movie. NOW!!!
  • Sometimes, movies are just ahead of their time. I have a feeling that if a movie like If I Die Before I Wake was released today in a post-The Strangers world, it might gain a sizable following. Unfortunately, it was made and released right at the tail end of the post-Scream slasher cycle. Everyone was sort of fed up with horror and it got unfairly dumped onto video despite the fact that it has more suspense per minute that all of its competitors put together.

Keeping in line with most home invasion movies, the story here is pretty simple, but this time, we're transported immediately into the action. We don't even get to know the family that's about to get terrorized. A young girl (Stephanie Jones in what-should-have-been a star making role) wakes up in the middle of the night to the sound of someone breaking into the family's house. She keeps her little sister quiet and they try to hide and not make a noise as the rest of their family (mom, dad, and brother) are tortured and killed.

That's all it is for almost 90 minutes. It sounds potentially tedious, but the suspense never lets up and every squeak of a floorboard could pose a threat. It's masterful work.
  • Muse Watson is most known for his work in the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' horror franchises. But, 'IF I DIE BEFORE I WAKE' is a very under-rated horror film/movie. The film is well directed, and actually very scary. Muse Watson is also very cool in it.
  • I didn't have any high expectations when I rented this, but figured it was worth a shot. And indeed, "If I Die Before I Wake" was a surprise. There were some flaws, but overall, this was a very tense film.

The movie opens only minutes before the carnage begins. It is night, and we see the mother and father of the house in their room, the mother asleep, the father dozing off over a book. Their son, Ben, is on the computer and listening to some music. Their younger daughter Mary is asleep, and across from her, their older daughter Lori Beth is, too. Then a handful of robbers break in. Lori Beth is the first to realize, and thinking quick, hides herself and her sister, but it is too late for the rest of the family, who are held captive and terrorized. It is up to Lori Beth to try to escape with Mary, but she soon realizes the only escape is to fight back....

Indeed, the plot is somewhat familiar. "Last House on the Left," "I Spit On Your Grave, "House By the Lake" aka "Death Weekend," "The Desperate Hours," and so on and so forth, all have similar elements. But "If I Die Before I Wake" doesn't steal from them as much as one would think it would. In fact, this film has some fairly original and interesting ideas, and above all, it maintains quite a bit of tension, from beginning to end.

Clocking in at only 77 minutes, this movie wastes no time, and surprisingly enough, that may be its biggest flaw. We don't know anything about any of these characters, and only grow to worry about the family. When the film first begins, and the robbers break in, we have no emotion towards any of the characters involved. If ten or fifteen minutes were taken to establish characters, as well as the robbers/killers/lunatics' motive, at least the night of terror, so to speak, would have evoked more emotions early on. Instead, the characters are one-dimensional, and we never even learn the names of the parents!

The film makes up for its weak points with a good amount of tension and excitement. Also, it's a surprisingly violent and disturbing movie. There's quite a deal of violent content, including rape, which is more than you'd expect from a direct-to-video low-budgeter obviously shelved for a little while before being released. (Found this in the New Release section of Blockbuster.) And a lot of what Lori Beth goes through and resorts to is logical and I always seemed to agree with her plan. I particularly liked her desperate attempt to contact someone off the Internet (but don't miss the cheap rip-off version of AOL called American Chat that she logs onto, it's pretty bad). It was an interesting idea, because yes, she could get in contact with someone, but they probably wouldn't help her. Smart idea.

In fact, despite overall weak characterization, Stephanie Jones did a lot with Lori Beth's character. She conveyed a great deal of emotion, and she was a very strong character and a terrific heroine. On the other hand, in the other starring role, Muse Watson as lead baddie Daryl was over the top, and I wasn't impressed. He's slightly more menacing here than in "I Know What You Did Last Summer," but a better actor would have done much more with the role. Imagine Robert DeNiro in his role. Now that would be scary.

For a better version of this, try Michael Haneke's "Funny Games" (see my review). It's a Dutch film (with subtitles) about a family (mother, father, son, dog) taken hostage at their secluded vacation home by two subtly disturbing teenage boys, who proceed with psychological warfare on the family, daring them to survive until 9:00 the next morning. It's an absolutely terrifying movie, and brilliantly made. I recommend it.

Overall, I still recommend "If I Die Before I Wake," too. It's tense, it's scary, and it pulls a few unexpected punches. With more exposition of the characters, and a minute or two longer of an ending (I felt there could have been a little more to it before the credits rolled), this would be an excellent movie. Still, it's very well done. Check it out.
  • If I Die Before I wake is a reletively short but effective horror movie that follows a family held hostage by burglars. We know little about the characters, but all play a very important role in the film. The film opens with brief shots of the family. Parents sleeping in one room. Teenage son Ben working at his computer in his room. The two sisters asleep in thier room. This is all we know of the characters when the burglars break down the door to the house. Lori Beth, the oldest sister. She hears the burglars enter and hides little sister Mary. Ben, listening to music over his headphones is quickly captured. He is heard yelling and seen being carried by to of the three burglars into his parent's room where they too are taken hostage. Lori Beth tried to escape but can't. After telling her sister to remain hidden, she sneaks into Ben's room and grabs one of his baseball bats as a weapon. She sees her family through the open door. Mom and Dad sitting on their bed hands tied behind their backs. Ben is laying on the floor also tied up. The burglars save a great deal of their fury for Ben. The rather big kid is beaten and kicked several times before he is gagged. The father, too is briefly gagged. From this point on, the movie is very violent. Lori Beth trails the burglars through the house until the end. The story is very good, but the excessive and constant violence and fouls language seems to spoil certain aspects of the film. All of the actors do a very good job in their roles. If you can take the violence, you will enjoy this movie.
  • ...since I watched the movie just recently on German TV and I don't know how much was edited out by the TV station it was on. There really seemed to be a lot missing and the whole story seemed inconsistent and lacked continuity. I did not see any rape scene although there was supposed to be one somewhere. I never found out, who the intruders were and why they were there.

Some other bits of the movie just made it appear ridiculously fake (ripping out parts of the house, don't want to spoil anything) and at one point I was sure that Lori Beth and one intruder MUST HAVE seen each other, but both actors "no sold" the encounter.

Well, I don't want to rate the movie. It kept me watching and entertained me, but there certainly seemed to be some flaws. However, since I probably watched a highly edited version I don't find myself in a position to fairly rate this movie.
