Pod and Homily, tiny "borrowers" who live in a cottage of regular sized human beings, are forced to find a new place to live when they learn of the upcoming departure of the humans in whose house they reside.
Ditchley and Ilrick trap Pod and Homily in the kettle but were able to escape. With Spiller and Arrietty, they travel downstream, arriving in Little Fordham, a village designed for little people, where they try to live in secret.
George leaves with Ms. Menzies to stay at nearby Fordham. Little Fordham's owner, Mr. Pott, sees them and kidnaps them to be used as a tourist attraction. The Clocks create a hot-air balloon and escape out of a window to freedom.
Knowing they cannot go back to Little Fordham, they again take to the great outdoors. The series ends with the Borrowers sailing down the stream, and Pod says that whatever happens, there's always some way to manage.
