Rolf Harris, a once-beloved British kids’ TV personality who was later sentenced to five years in prison for a string of assaults on young girls, has died, the BBC reported Tuesday. He was 93.
The Australian entertainer was found guilty in 2014 of assaulting four girls between 1968 and 1986 and served three and a half years before being released in 2017. Before that, he was a widely beloved figure in the U.K. and Australia across five decades.
The trial judge admonished Harris for an apparent lack of remorse, and he never appeared on TV again.
Harris was also a prolific musician, songwriter, comedian, actor, and painter, having painted Queen Elizabeth’s official portrait in 2005. He used unique instruments in his performances, with particular proficiency at the didgeridoo and stylophone.
Harris’ entertainment career began in the 1950s with several hit songs, including “Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport,” “Jake the Peg” and “Two Little Boys,...

Convicted sex offender and former television host Rolf Harris has died, Pa reports. He was 93.
Pa said his death, on May 10, had been confirmed by a registrar at Maidenhead Town Hall. The cause of death was listed as neck cancer and old age.
Harris, an artist and musician, was a well-known face on British television until 2012 when he was arrested and questioned about a series of sexual assaults he was said to have carried out between 1968 and 1986. In 2014 he was convicted and sentenced to almost six years in prison.
He served only three years, after being released in 2017.
Born in Perth, Western Australia in 1930, he moved to London as an art student in the early 1950s. He quickly found a job in television, showing children how to draw cartoons before moving onto other kids shows including “Jigsaw” and “Whirligig.”

Rolf Harris, the once-beloved BBC presenter whose legacy was tarnished when he was convicted of child sex offenses, has died. He was 93.
Press Association, the UK media agency, said it had confirmed the news of Harris’ death with the registrar at Maidenhead Town Hall. He was reportedly unwell with neck cancer.
In a statement, his family told the BBC: “This is to confirm that Rolf Harris recently died peacefully surrounded by family and friends and has now been laid to rest. They ask that you respect their privacy. No further comment will be made.”
The Australian presenter was taken into the hearts of British viewers as the twinkling and empathetic host of shows including Animal Hospital, but his downfall was spectacular.

ITV is to examine the truth behind disgraced former TV star Rolf Harris’ abusive crimes in a two-part documentary series from All3Media-backed indie Optomen.
Rolf Harris: Hiding in Plain Sight (w/t) will speak to his victims, the police who investigated him and colleagues who worked alongside him to tell the story of the rise and fall of a TV star who came across as a non-threatening eccentric with a devoted wife.
Following the Jimmy Savile scandal, the former Animal Hospital presenter and multi-hyphenate was investigated for abusing his daughter’s friend when she was 13, and accusers then emerged stating that he molested them on the shows he worked on for years.
ITV’s films will explore Harris’ remorseless attitude in court and his wife and daughter’s decision to stand by him. He served a three year sentence in the UK and was released in 2017.

This cat was in a sticky — and salty — situation.
The stray was found banging around the streets of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, with a mayo jar stuck on her head. She was first spied by Linda Ruggere, a neighborhood animal lover who does her best to look after the stray cats in the area.
“I saw this cat coming to eat and it had a mayo jar and I was like, ‘Oh, my God!’ and it ran away. The next day, I was literally able to get the mayo jar and try to get its head popped out and it ran away again,...

His former owner may not have believed in Clyde, but the good folks at Gallatin County Animal Shelter and County Animal Hospital in Mason, Ohio, knew he deserved a chance to live.
The 1-year-old dog suffering from a 6-lb. tumor was dropped off at the shelter with instructions to euthanize him, reports WLWT5 News. Luckily, staff at Gallatin County did no such thing.
Doctors think the poor pup’s tumor may have been growing for at least six months — half the dog’s lifetime. On Tuesday, he was brought to the animal hospital for surgery to remove the tumor and is currently resting and recuperating.

Dwayne is currently enjoying the safety, care and affection of the Helen Woodward Animal Center, but his time before this was dark and scary. But the good news is that Henry’s tumor was removed in a surgery paid for completely by donations, and as of June, the 8-year-old pooch was recovering “very well.

We have a few suggestions as to where Prince Shembo can take a knee. The 23-year-old Atlanta Falcons linebacker has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, after his now ex-girlfriend accused him of killing her dog, a Yorkie named Dior, E! News confirmed Friday. The Gwinnett County Police Department states that Denicia Williams called the cops on April 19 to report that four days prior, she had taken her dog with her to Shembo's apartment and, after leaving them alone for a time at some point, she returned to find the dog unresponsive. Williams then took Dior to Duluth Animal Hospital, where he died shortly after arrival. Police also say that Shembo made comments about kicking the dog...

Dean Cain needs a tighter leash ... for himself and his dog -- his pooch was nearly sent to animal control after sneaking out, all because the actor failed to register his best friend. Law enforcement sources tell us Cain's black lab Bella got loose last week but a good samaritan saved the day, and dropped her off at Malibu Coast Animal Hospital. Here's the problem: Bella wasn't licensed with the city ... so she was automatically labeled a stray.

Are SNL's growing pains over as it enters its 40th season? It certainly didn't seem that way from the show's bizarre season opener. While Chris Pratt—and Chris Pratt's abs, in a supporting role—conducted themselves amiably, the show seemed to lack the festive air we'd expect from a premiere tied to such an important season. Instead, it seemed on a mission to prove that a new era has come to Studio 8H—one with a markedly different tone. There was only one notable cameo, and it came from Pratt's wife, Anna Faris—not, as might have been expected,...

While Pratt did an admirable job as host, even his smile and his abs couldn't rescue some of the night's sketches.
Saturday Night Live kicked off its 40th season tonight with a great host, a leaner and more focused cast, a committed musical guest and – unfortunately - a very uneven handful of sketches.
Guardians Of The Galaxy star Chris Pratt brought his effervescent charm and boundless enthusiasm to the Studio 8H stage, and it was his glowing and magnetic personality that saved the night from being a total loss.

That's not to say that none of the sketches were good. The sketches that worked really, really worked, and the ones that didn't seemed to bomb hard.
The night started off with a cold open that was a bundle of nervous energy and fumbled lines, even from SNL vet Aidy Bryant. The sketch...

We count him among the Guardians of the Galaxy (and as the nation’s newest box-office titan, to boot), but is Chris Pratt a master of the sketch-comedy format?
It’s not the easiest question to answer, honestly. The Parks and Recreation funnyman’s maiden voyage as host of Saturday Night Live (for the show’s Season 40 premiere) got off to a rocky start in the writing department — with a thuddingly unfunny cold open about the NFL’s domestic-violence crisis and then a monologue built around a barely amusing acoustic ditty and weak jokes such as Pratt noting his weight-loss plan was the “‘Hey,...

Welcome back to another season of “Saturday Night Live,” everyone. It will be a momentous year for the show, as it seeks to shake off the hangover of last season’s uneven, sometimes turmoil-filled year. But in this, its fortieth season, there’s a lot about which to be optimistic. The cast is smaller, but its core cast is essentially intact, and those that “SNL” have added suggest a willingness on the show’s part to explore new comedic voices within its venerable institution. Kicking things off will be recent box-office hero Chris Pratt, with the sister of “Big Brother 16” Frankie Grande serving as musical guest. (I just typed that in case Frankie has a Google search on his name. Sorry, Ariana.) I’m actually writing this from the road rather than my home, so I won’t have the usual luxury of pausing mid-show when needed. So things will...

Brave little guy! A 10-year-old goldfish named George can now swim again after his owner paid $200 for surgery to remove a life-threatening tumor, ABC News reports. The Australian owner coughed up the cash for the procedure because they couldn't bear the thought of losing him, anchor Amy Robach explained. The 45-minute rare surgery included anesthesia and went "swimmingly well." Dr. Tristan Rich from Lort Smith Animal Hospital spoke to ABC about the successful operation, noting that there was one specific measure that proved to be difficult. "There wasn't [...]...

George the goldfish has a life primed for an underwater memoir. The 10-year-old fish recently went through a risky surgery to remove a large tumor on his head, reports Mashable. The life-saving operation cost $200 and was performed at the Lort Smith Animal Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. To George's owner, the procedure was worth every penny. The pair have become quite attached over their decade-long friendship. George was brought to see a veterinarian after he stopped eating and swimming. Exotic and wildlife vet Dr. Tristan Rich noticed the tumor and told the owner surgery was a necessity to save the swimmer's life.

The 3-year-old Great Dane was miserable and retching when his owners rushed him to a northwest Portland emergency animal hospital. It was something he ate! X-rays showed a stomach full of "a large quantity of foreign material." Nearly two hours of surgery later, Dr. Ashley Magee had the answer - the dog had consumed 44 socks. Luckily, Dr. Magee managed to remove 43½ of the offenders.DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital spokeswoman Shawna Harch said it's perhaps the strangest case in the hospital's history, The Oregonian reported. So strange that the hospital entered last February's tale, complete with X-rays, in an annual contest sponsored by the vet magazine,...

The 84-year-old TV presenter - who stands accused of 12 counts of indecent assault against four underage girls between 1968 and 1986 - agreed that his illicit affair with his daughter's friend proves that there is a darker character behind what the prosecution described as his ''friendly and lovable exterior''. Prosecuting barrister Sasha Wass QC questioned Rolf: ''You are pretty good, Mr. Harris, aren't you, at disguising that dark side of your character?'' The star replied: ''Yes.'' It took over a month, but, finally, Bruno is home. The 7-year-old German shepherd, who was hailed a hero in March for saving lives after he was shot in the jaw at point-blank range by a fleeing gang member in Anaheim, California, was released from the hospital on Friday. The pooch, who happily ran out the doors of the Yorba Regional Animal Hospital and into a patrol car, will continue his recovery at the home of his former partner, Officer Rj Young. "We're all elated," says veterinarian Dr. Stephen Dunbar, who treated the dog's life-threatening injuries. "This case is extremely rare.

A police dog named Bruno is recovering after being shot during a parole check in Anaheim, Calif. The 7-year-old German Shepherd had emergency surgery to remove a bullet from his lung and repair his jaw after a man began shooting at police officers on March 20. Bruno was injured after guiding officers to where Robert Moreno Jr., a known gang member, was hiding. "The dog alerted that the suspect was hiding behind a trash can. As they went up, the suspect stood up and started shooting at the direction of the officers and purposely aimed at the dog, shooting the dog,...

Keeping Up With the Kardashians aired Kanye West's proposal to Kim Kardashian last night. Spoiler! She said yes. Charlie Sheen is getting hitched again! Let me state for the record that Josh Hutcherson is adorable. The child-star-turned-Hunger-Games-heartthrob will lose none of his existing fans over last night's lackluster Saturday Night Live episode. Hosting for the first time at age 21, Hutcherson was a genial, smirk-free presence. Unfortunately, the same unflappable sincerity that makes him terrific in films (did you see The Kids Are All Right?) hobbles his ability to do sketch comedy, much like that sword hobbled Peeta's leg in the first Hunger Games movie. Sorry, Hunger Games mania is catching. Like fire, one could say.

If last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live were an edition of The Hunger Games, then host Josh Hutcherson would have been one of those poor kids who dies in the melee outside the Cornucopia — just minutes after the Games begin.
I’m not trying to imply that Hutcherson bombed. Quite the opposite is true: he had the sort of on-camera ease that any first-time host would envy, never visibly suffering from nerves or being too obvious about reading cue cards. The problem is that after Hutcherson’s monologue, he largely faded into the background, playing a succession of...
