I'm a big fan of the Children's Film Foundation series and I found THE RESCUE SQUAD to be a particularly enjoyable example of the format. The plot, what little of it exists, merely sees some kids losing their model plane in the top window of a historical tower with no entranceway, and then having to figure out how to retrieve it. What follows is an hour of the usual madcap elements of a CFF production: inventive children, slapstick pratfalls involving unfortunate adults, and lots of surreal elements. The kid in the wooden crate is my favourite element of this one, as he brings a Daliesque vibe to the production. Elsewhere, old-timers Michael Balfour and Peter Butterworth add some reliable goofiness, and the whole thing has a pleasingly vibrant tone; a celebration of yesteryear's childhood.
